Seat Belt Pretensioner

Hyundai i30. Pre-tensioner seat belt

Your vehicle is equipped with driver and front passenger and rear passenger (if equipped) seat belt pretensioners (with pretensioner). The purpose of the pretensioner is to ensure that the seat belts fit snugly against the occupant's body in certain frontal or side collisions. Seat belt pretensioners may be activated in accidents where the frontal or side collision(s) is severe enough, together with the airbags.

When the vehicle stops suddenly or if a passenger attempts to lean forward too quickly, the seat belt retractor locks in position. In certain frontal collisions, the pretensioner activates and tightens the seat belt against the occupant's body.

If the system detects excessive load on the driver's or passenger's seat belt when the seat belt pretensioner is activated, the load limiter inside the pretensioner will release some of the tension on the affected seat belt.

WARNING

  • Always wear your seat belt and sit properly in your seat.
  • Do not use a seat belt that is loose or twisted. A loose or twisted seat belt will not protect you properly in an accident.
  • Do not place anything near the buckle. This may adversely affect the buckle and cause it to malfunction.
  • Always replace the pretensioners after activation or an accident.
  • NEVER inspect, service, repair, or replace the pretensioners yourself. This must be done at an authorized HYUNDAI service center.
  • Do not strike the seat belt assemblies.

WARNING

Do not touch the seat belt pretensioner assemblies for several minutes after they have been activated. When the seat belt pretensioner mechanism is activated in a collision, the pretensioner may become hot and can burn you.

CAUTION

Body repair work on the front of the vehicle may damage the seat belt pretensioner system. Therefore, we recommend that the system be serviced by an authorized HYUNDAI service center.

The seat belt pretensioner system consists mainly of the following components. Their locations are shown in the illustration above:

(1) SRS Warning Light
(2) Seat Belt Pretensioner Retractor
(3) SRS Control Module
(4) Rear Seat Belt Pretensioner Retractor (if equipped)

NOTICE

The sensor that activates the SRS control module is connected to the seat belt pretensioners. The SRS warning light on the instrument panel will illuminate for approximately 6 seconds after the ignition switch is turned ON, and then it should turn off.

If the pretensioner is not functioning properly, the warning light may illuminate even though the SRS airbag system is not malfunctioning. If the warning light does not illuminate, stays on, or flashes while the vehicle is being driven, we recommend that the seat belt pretensioners and/or the SRS control module be inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI service center as soon as possible.

Information

  • Seat belt pretensioners for both the driver and front passenger may be activated in certain frontal or side collisions.
  • When the seat belt pretensioners are activated, a loud noise may be heard and fine dust, which may resemble smoke, may be visible in the passenger compartment. These are normal operating conditions and are not hazardous.
  • Although it is non-toxic, fine dust may cause skin irritation and should not be inhaled for extended periods. Thoroughly wash all exposed skin after an accident in which the seat belt pretensioners have been activated.
