Electronic Power Steering (EPS)

~1min read

The system assists you in steering the vehicle. If the vehicle is turned off or if the power steering system malfunctions, you can still steer the vehicle, but it will require greater steering effort.

If you notice any change in the steering effort required during normal driving, have the system checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.

CAUTION

If the Electric Power Steering system does not operate normally, the warning light ( Hyundai Ioniq. Electric Power Steering (EPS) ) will illuminate on the instrument cluster. You can still steer the vehicle, but it will require greater effort. Take your vehicle to an authorized HYUNDAI dealer and have the system checked as soon as possible.

Information

The following symptoms may occur during normal vehicle operation:

  • Steering effort may be high immediately after the Engine Start/Stop button is turned to the ON position. This occurs while the system performs an EPS diagnosis. When the diagnosis is complete, the steering wheel will return to normal.
  • A clicking sound may be heard from the EPS relay when the Engine Start/Stop button is turned ON or OFF.
  • A motor noise may be heard when the vehicle is stopped or moving at low speed.
  • An abnormal noise may occur when operating the steering wheel at low temperatures. If the temperature rises, the noise will disappear. This is a normal condition.
  • If the EPS system detects a malfunction, the power steering assist function will not be activated to prevent fatal accidents. Warning lights may illuminate on the instrument cluster or steering effort may be high. If any of the following symptoms occur, immediately drive the vehicle to a safe location and have it inspected.
