System Overview

PDW-R (Parking Distance Warning-Reverse) is an electronic driver assistance system that warns the driver to exercise caution when parking or driving at low speed. The system uses ultrasonic waves to detect objects in close proximity to the vehicle. PDW-R consists of four PDW-R sensors that detect obstacles and transmit the result, divided into three warning levels (first, second, and third), to the BCM via the communication line. The BCM determines the warning level from the communication message transmitted by the slave sensors, and then operates the buzzer or transmits data for display.
System Operation Specification
  1. INITIAL Mode
    1. The system initialization time is 500 ms after IGN1 + R gear.
    2. PDW-R recognizes LID and sets the sensor identifier during initialization.
    3. PDW-R activates each sensor, then performs diagnosis after BCM initialization is completed.
    4. If diagnosis is completed and no sensor sends an error message, the PDW-R warning buzzer normally operates.
    5. If a malfunction is received from any sensor, the R-PAS warning buzzer does not operate, but the warning alarm operates momentarily. If there is a display option, a warning symbol is also displayed.
    6. The buzzer sounds once when a sensor malfunctions, but the sensor fault status is shown on the display until the fault is repaired.
  2. Normal Mode
    1. Line communication starts and maintains the procedure after IGN1 ON+P transmission.
    2. BCM sends a message once to each sensor as an operation request to check the initial system status, and all four sensors respond at once. At this time, if there are no problems, the alarm turns on 500 ms after the R gear is selected, at 300 ms intervals.
    3. After initialization, normal mode starts 100 ms after the alarm output is completed.
    4. The obstacle warning is divided into 3 levels. The first and second are intermittent sounds, and the third alarm is continuous.
    5. The effective vehicle speed during PDW-R operation is below 10 km/h.
    6. Refer to the 'Digital PDW LIN Communication' section for more detailed communication specifications.
  3. Measurement conditions – PVC pole (diameter 75 mm, length 1 m), normal temperature
  4. Distance to detected objects (measured directly in front of the sensor) 61 cm (24.0 in) - 120 cm (47.2 in): ± 15 cm (5.9 in) 31 cm (12.2 in) - 60 cm (23.6 in): ± 15 cm (5.9 in) Less than 30 cm (11.8 in): ± 10 cm (3.9 in)

Direct measurement

Transmission and reception are performed by one sensor (RL, RCL, RCR, RR for each sensor configuration).

Indirect measurement

(RCL → RL, RCL → RCR, RCR → RCL, RCR → RR, performed in order) With two or three sensors, one of them transmits and the others receive.

Direct and indirect measurement once

With two or three sensors, one sensor performs both transmission and reception, and the others perform reception only.
PDW-R Warning Signal System: When a PDW-R sensor detects an object, a warning sound is output through the warning device, such as a buzzer. The PDW-R sensor sends data to the BCM via the LIN bus, and the BCM outputs the audible warning for each PDW-R sensor by priority. It also acts as a gateway only when sending the visual warning to a device such as the cluster.
  • Buzzer / display information processing method of BCM. In the case of RL/RR sensor information, BCM processes the information of each sensor directly for the display and buzzer function. For the CL/CR sensor buzzer output, BCM processes the center combination information by priority of both sensors.
System Operation Specification: When the system is powered (after IGN ON and shift to R), the MICOM checks all sensor channels. If any error is detected, it sounds the buzzer for 300 ms after 500 ms. If an error is detected in a sensor, it sounds the buzzer corresponding to the faulty sensor instead of the initial start signal. The operation for entering normal mode is as follows.
With R gear engaged, the system operates as follows.
With R gear disengaged, the system operates as follows.
※ Permissible error range on the oscillogram is ±10%. Alarm output characteristics classified by distance between sensors. Alarm priority level status logic is as follows. (Identical sensors)
* Determination of α value
  1. Low priority sensor off: α = 0 ms
  2. Low priority sensor - 1st level warning: α < 340 ms
  3. Low priority sensor - 2nd level warning: α < 170 ms
  4. Low priority sensor - 1st level warning: β = 1700 ms
  5. Low priority sensor - 2nd level warning: β = 1700 ms
  6. Low priority sensor - 3rd level warning: β = 700 ms
  7. First warning zone (61–120 cm)
  8. Second warning zone (31 cm–80 cm)
  9. Third warning zone (less than 30 cm)
  10. Warning for ultrasonic sensor. If one or more front/rear parking assist sensors are malfunctioning, a warning sound will sound and a warning message will appear (cluster).
    1. Warning Sound
    2. Warning Message
* Determination of β value. Alarm control by detection distance is performed as follows. Visual Alarm Indicator Specification. When the transmission is shifted to R, the cluster controls the indicator as follows. Pattern. When the system detects an object, the indicator turns on immediately. If the object disappears during PDW-R detection operation, the indicator remains on for 2 sec. before turning off. (However, when the third-stage alarm changes to 'No Alarm' status, the third-stage alarm is output for two seconds.)
  • It only indicates the obstacle detection position.
  • At the third warning level, the indicator flashes at one-second intervals.
  • In normal warning mode, the built-in display RCR/RCL
Communication Standard. This section defines communication between PDW-R and BCM. PDW-R transmits object detection results and sensor diagnosis results to BCM in accordance with this document; BCM assumes the alarm output function. The indicator shows the transmitted position and alarm data in alarm mode; it finds the nearest data and first activates the alarm for the nearest data. (For example, if RL is a first-stage alarm and RR is a third-stage alarm, the RR alarm has priority.)
