Winter Precautions
Use high-quality ethylene glycol-based engine coolant.
Your vehicle is filled with high-quality ethylene glycol-based engine coolant. This is the only type of coolant that should be used, as it helps prevent corrosion in the cooling system, lubricates the water pump, and prevents freezing. Be sure to replace or add coolant according to the maintenance schedule in Chapter 7. Before winter, check the coolant to make sure its freezing point is low enough for the temperatures expected during winter.
Check the Battery and Cables
Winter temperatures affect battery performance. Inspect the battery and cables as described in Chapter 7. The battery charge level can be checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer or at a service station.
Change to "winter" engine oil if necessary.
In some regions, it is recommended to use "winter grade" oil with lower viscosity in winter. Refer to Chapter 8 for more information. If you are not sure which type of winter oil to use, consult an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
Inspect Spark Plugs and Ignition System
Inspect the spark plugs as described in Chapter 7. Replace them if necessary. Also check all ignition system wires and components for cracks, wear, and damage.
To Prevent Door Locks from Freezing
To prevent door locks from freezing, spray an approved anti-icing fluid or glycerin into the key holes. If the lock cylinder is already covered with ice, spray approved de-icing fluid onto the ice to remove it. If the lock internals freeze, try to thaw them with a heated key. Use the heated key carefully to avoid injury.
Use an approved windshield washer antifreeze solution in the system.
To prevent the washer fluid from freezing, add an approved windshield washer antifreeze solution as specified on the washer fluid reservoir. Windshield washer antifreeze solution is available from an authorized HYUNDAI dealer and most automotive retailers. Do not use engine coolant or other antifreeze solutions, as they may damage the vehicle's paint.
Prevent the Parking Brake from Freezing
Under certain conditions, the parking brake may freeze in the applied position. This most often occurs when snow or ice accumulates around or near the rear brakes, or when the brakes are wet. When there is a risk that the parking brake may freeze, temporarily apply it by placing the shift lever in P (Park). Also block the rear wheels in advance to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Then release the parking brake.
Do not allow ice and snow to accumulate under
Under some conditions, snow and ice can accumulate under the fenders and interfere with the steering. When driving in such conditions in severe winter weather, you should regularly inspect the underside of the vehicle to make sure the front wheels and steering components are not obstructed.
Carry Emergency Equipment
Depending on weather conditions, you should carry appropriate emergency equipment while driving. Items you may want to take with you include tire chains, tow straps or chains, a flashlight, emergency flares, sand, a shovel, jumper cables, a windshield scraper, gloves, a rag, coveralls, a blanket, etc.
Do not place objects or materials in the engine compartment
Placing items or materials in the engine compartment may cause engine failure or fire, because they can block engine cooling. Damage of this kind is not covered by the manufacturer's warranty.
