Selecting AWD Mode

WARNING

If the AWD warning light ( ) remains on the instrument panel, your vehicle may have a malfunction in the all-wheel drive system. When the AWD warning light ( ) illuminates, have the vehicle checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

NOTICE

  • Keep the AWD in Auto mode when driving under normal road conditions.
  • When driving on normal roads, conditions (especially when turning) in AWD LOCK mode, the driver may notice slight mechanical vibration or noise. This is an extremely normal phenomenon and not a malfunction. When AWD LOCK mode is released, such noise or vibration will disappear immediately.

PLEDGE

When driving on normal roads, turn off AWD LOCK mode by pressing the AWD LOCK button (the AWD LOCK indicator light goes off). Driving on normal roads with AWD LOCK mode engaged, especially when turning, may cause mechanical noise or vibration. The noise and vibration will disappear when AWD LOCK mode is deactivated. Continued driving with noise and vibration may damage some powertrain components.

NOTICE

When AWD LOCK mode is deactivated, you may feel as if the drive power is transmitted entirely to the front wheels.

For Safe All-Wheel Drive Operation

Before driving

  • Make sure all passengers are wearing their seat belts.
  • Sit upright and closer to the steering wheel than usual. Adjust the steering wheel to a position that is comfortable for you to drive.

Driving on Snowy or Icy Roads

  • Start slowly by applying the accelerator pedal gradually.
  • Use winter tires or tire chains.
  • Maintain a sufficient distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you.
  • Use engine braking when decelerating.
  • Avoid speeding, rapid acceleration, sudden braking and sharp turns to prevent skidding.

Driving on Sand or Mud

  • Maintain a slow and steady speed.
  • Use snow chains when driving on muddy roads if necessary.
  • Maintain a sufficient distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead of you.
  • Reduce vehicle speed and always check road conditions.
  • Avoid speeding, rapid acceleration, sudden braking and sharp turns to avoid getting stuck.

PLEDGE

When the vehicle is stuck in snow, sand or mud, place non-slip material under the drive wheels to provide traction, OR slowly rock the wheels forward and in reverse to create a rocking motion that may free the vehicle. However, avoid running the engine continuously at high speed. Doing so may cause damage to the all-wheel drive system.

Driving Uphill or Downhill

• Driving Uphill

- Before starting, check whether you can drive uphill.
- Drive as straight as possible.

• Driving Downhill

- Do not shift gears while driving downhill. Select the gear before starting downhill.
- Move as slowly as possible, using engine braking when driving downhill.
- Drive straight as much as possible.

WARNING

Exercise extreme caution when driving down steep hills. The vehicle may roll over depending on the grade, terrain and water/mud conditions.

WARNING

Do not traverse the slope of a steep hill. A small change in steering wheel angle may destabilize the vehicle, or the vehicle may lose stability if it stops its forward movement. Your vehicle may roll over and result in serious injury or death.

Driving Through Water

  • Try to avoid driving in deep water. This may stall your engine and clog the exhaust pipes.
  • If you need to drive through water, stop your vehicle, set the all-wheel drive to LOCK mode and drive at a speed of less than 5 mph (8 km/h).
  • Do not shift gears while driving through water.

Additional Driving Conditions

  • Become familiar with off-road conditions before driving.
  • Always be attentive when driving off-road and avoid hazardous areas.
  • Drive slowly in strong winds.
  • Reduce vehicle speed when turning. The center of gravity of all-wheel drive vehicles is higher than that of conventional all-wheel drive vehicles, so they are more likely to roll over when you turn a corner quickly.

• Always hold the steering wheel firmly when driving off-road.

WARNING

Do not grip the inside of the steering wheel when driving off-road. You may suddenly injure your hand from steering wheel kickback or the wheel rebounding from striking objects on the ground. You may lose control of the steering wheel, which may result in serious injury or death.
