Seat Belt Pretensioners (Driver and Front Passenger)

The driver and front passenger seats of your vehicle are equipped with seat belt pretensioners. The pretensioners ensure that the seat belt holds the occupant firmly against the seatback in certain frontal collisions. These belts may activate during an accident together with the airbags if the frontal collision is severe.
When the vehicle stops suddenly, or the occupant attempts to lean forward too quickly, the seat belt retractor locks. In certain frontal collisions, the pretensioner activates and pulls the belt tightly against the occupant's body.
Retractor Pretensioner
The purpose of the retractor pretensioner is to hold the seat belt firmly against the upper body of the vehicle occupant in certain frontal collisions.
If the system detects excessive tension in the driver's or passenger's seat belt when the pretensioner activates, the built-in load limiter on the inertia reel retractor slightly loosens the corresponding belt.
WARNING
- Always wear your seat belt and sit properly in your seat.
- Do not use a seat belt that is loose or twisted. A loose or twisted seat belt will not protect you effectively in an accident.
- Do not place any objects near the buckle. This may affect its operation.
- Always replace the pretensioners after they have been activated or after an accident.
- NEVER inspect, service, repair, or replace the pretensioners yourself. These operations must be performed by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
- Do not kick the seat belts.
WARNING
Do not touch the seat belt pretensioners for several minutes after they have been activated. When the seat belt pretensioner is activated in a collision, the pretensioner becomes hot and may cause burns.
WARNING
Body repair work on the front of the vehicle may damage the seat belt pretensioner system.
Therefore, we recommend that you have the system serviced by an authorized dealer. HYUNDAI recommends.

The seat belt pretensioner system mainly consists of the following components, the locations of which are shown in the illustration above:
(1) SRS Airbag Warning Light
(2) Pretensioner with Retractor
(3) SRS Control Module
NOTICE
The sensor that activates the SRS airbag is connected to the seat belt pretensioners. When the ignition is turned on, the SRS airbag warning light illuminates on the instrument panel for approximately 6 seconds, then turns off.
If the pretensioner is not operating properly, the warning light may illuminate even if the SRS airbag is operating normally. If the light does not illuminate, remains on, or illuminates while driving, we recommend having the seat belt pretensioners and/or SRS airbags checked by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.
Information
- The driver and front passenger seat belt pretensioners may activate in certain frontal or side collisions.
- The pretensioners activate even if the seat belts are not fastened or are not locked at the moment of a collision.
- When the seat belt pretensioners activate, they may make a loud noise and produce fine smoke-like dust inside the passenger compartment. This is a normal operating condition and is not dangerous.
- Although this fine dust is not toxic, it may cause skin irritation and inhalation should be limited. Thoroughly clean all exposed skin surfaces after an accident that caused the seat belt pretensioners to activate.
