Description

Exhaust emissions (CO, HC, NOx) are controlled by engine modifications and special control devices. Modifications to the combustion chamber, intake manifold, camshaft and ignition system form the basic control system. These elements are integrated into the system that controls exhaust emissions while ensuring driving comfort and fuel economy. AIR-FUEL RATIO CONTROL SYSTEM [MULTI-POINT FUEL INJECTION (MFI) SYSTEM] The MFI multi-point fuel injection system uses the signal from the oxygen sensor to switch and control the injector installed in each cylinder's intake port, simultaneously regulating the air-fuel mixture ratio and reducing emissions. This allows the engine to produce exhaust gas composition suitable for use with a three-way catalytic converter. The three-way catalytic converter is designed to convert the three pollutants [hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NOx)] into harmless substances. The MFI system has two operating modes.
  1. The open-loop air-fuel ratio is controlled by information pre-programmed into the ECM.
  2. The closed-loop air-fuel ratio is continuously adjusted based on information from the oxygen sensor.
