Emergency Towing

If towing is required, we recommend contacting an authorized HYUNDAI dealer or a professional towing service.

If a towing service is not available in an emergency, your vehicle can be temporarily towed using a chain or strap attached to the emergency towing hook located at the front (or rear) of the vehicle.

Use extreme caution when towing a vehicle with a strap or chain. The driver must remain in the vehicle to steer it and apply the brakes if necessary.

This type of towing should be performed on paved roads, over a short distance, and at low speed. The wheels, axles, drivetrain, steering, and brakes must be in good condition.

Always observe the following precautions during emergency towing:

  • Turn the ignition switch to the ACC position so that the steering wheel is not locked.
  • Move the shift lever to the N (Neutral) position. • Do not apply the parking brake.
  • Apply more force to the brake pedal, because braking performance is reduced.
  • The vehicle is harder to steer because power steering assistance is reduced.
  • The towing vehicle must be heavier than the towed vehicle.
  • The drivers of both vehicles must maintain constant communication.
  • Before performing emergency towing, make sure the hook is in good condition.
  • Attach the towing strap or chain to the hook.
  • Do not jerk the hook. Apply a steady and gradual force.
  • Use a towing strap or chain no longer than 5 m (16 ft). Tie a red or white cloth about 30 cm (12 in) wide in the middle of the strap or chain for better visibility.
  • Drive carefully so that the strap or chain remains taut during towing.
  • Before towing, check for automatic transmission fluid leaks under the vehicle. If there is a leak, use a flatbed trailer or wheel dolly.

WARNING

To avoid damaging the vehicle during towing:

  • When using the hook, keep the pulling direction straight. Do not pull at an angle to the side or vertically.
  • Do not use the hook to free a vehicle stuck in mud, sand, etc., that cannot get out under its own power.
  • Limit the vehicle speed to 15 km/h and do not drive more than 1.5 km (1 mile) to avoid damaging the automatic transmission.
