Description and Operation
Description
The Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) system consists of a throttle body with a built-in drive motor and throttle position sensors (TPS). Instead of a conventional throttle cable, a position sensor is used. The Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor (APS) is used to receive data from the driver. The ECM uses the APS signal to calculate the target throttle angle. The throttle position is controlled by the ECM through the ETC motor. The TPS signal is used to provide feedback to the ECM regarding the throttle position. With ETC, precise throttle position control is possible and external speed control modules/cables are no longer required.

Repair Procedures
Inspection
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS)
- Connect the GDS to the Data Link Connector (DLC).
- Start the engine and measure the output voltages of TPS 1 and 2 at CLOSED THROTTLE and WIDE OPEN THROTTLE.
Specification: Refer to "Specifications"
ETC motor
- Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
- Disconnect the ETC module connector.
- Measure the resistance between terminals 1 and 2 of the ETC module.
- Check that the resistance is within specification.
Specification: Refer to "Specifications"
DEPOSIT
- Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position and disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
- Remove the air intake hose and resonator hose (Refer to Intake and Exhaust System in EM group).
- Disconnect the ETC module connector (A).
- Disconnect the coolant hoses (B).
- Remove the installation bolts (C), then remove the ETC module from the engine.

REMEDY
- To install, reverse the removal procedure. ETC body installation bolt: 7.8 ~ 9.8 N·m
ITEM
ETC Module Learning Procedure
When installing a new ETC module or reinstalling it, the ETC module learning procedure must be performed.- Hold the ignition switch or start button in the IG ON position for 5 seconds.
- Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, then start the engine.
