Actions to take in an emergency

Using the Compact Spare Tire (if equipped)

~2min read

The compact spare tire is designed for temporary use in emergencies only. If your vehicle is equipped with this type of tire, drive carefully and follow the safety instructions.

WARNING

To avoid problems with the compact spare and loss of control, which may lead to an accident:

  • Use the compact spare tire only in an emergency.
  • NEVER drive faster than 80 km/h.
  • Never exceed the maximum vehicle load capacity or the load capacity indicated on the side of the compact spare tire.
  • Do not use the compact spare tire continuously. Repair or replace the original tire as soon as possible to avoid problems with the compact spare tire.

When driving with the compact spare tire:

  • Check the tire pressure after installing the compact spare tire. It must be inflated to 420 kPa (60 psi).
  • Do not wash the vehicle in an automatic car wash when it is equipped with a compact spare tire.
  • Do not use the compact spare tire on any other vehicle, as it is designed specifically for your vehicle.
  • The compact spare tire has a shorter service life than a standard tire. Check the compact spare tire regularly and replace it with a tire of the same size and design mounted on the same wheel.
  • Do not use more than one compact spare tire at the same time.
  • Do not tow a trailer if your vehicle is equipped with a compact spare tire.

NOTICE

When the original tire and wheel are repaired and installed on the vehicle, the wheel nut torque must be set to avoid vibration. Tighten the wheel nuts to 9–11 kgf·m (65–79 lbf·ft).

WARNING

To avoid damage to the compact spare tire and the vehicle:

  • Adjust your speed to road conditions to avoid hazards such as potholes or debris.
  • Avoid driving over obstacles. The diameter of the compact spare tire is smaller than that of a standard wheel, reducing ground clearance by approximately 25 mm (1 in).
  • Do not use snow chains on a vehicle with a compact spare tire. Due to the reduced diameter, chains cannot be installed correctly.
  • Do not use the compact spare tire on other wheels. Also do not use standard tires, winter tires, or wheel covers with the compact spare tire.
