Inspection

  1. Check the crankshaft bearing oil clearance.
    1. To check the oil clearance between the main bearing and journal, remove the lower case and lower bearings.
    2. Clean each main bearing and journal with a clean cloth.
    3. Place a strip of Plastigage on each main journal.
    4. Install the lower case and lower bearings in place, then tighten the main bolts.
      Torque:
      Step 1: 27.5 ~ 31 N·m
      Step 2: 120 ~ 125°
    5. Remove the lower case and lower bearings.
    6. Measure the width of the Plastigage at its widest point.

      Oil clearance: 0.016 ~ 0.034 mm (0.00063 ~ 0.00134 in.)

    7. If the Plastigage width is too wide or too narrow, remove the upper bearing and lower bearing, then install new bearings with the same color code. Recheck the oil clearance.
    8. If the Plastigage indicates the clearance is still incorrect, immediately use bearings of a smaller or larger size. Recheck the oil clearance. CRANKSHAFT BORE IDENTIFICATION MARK
Letters are stamped on the block as a size mark for each of the five main bore diameters. Use these, together with the numbers or colors stamped on the crankshaft (main journal size marks), to select the correct bearings.

  2. Inspect the crankshaft end play. Using a dial indicator, measure the end play by prying the crankshaft forward and backward with a screwdriver. If the end play exceeds the maximum value, replace the center bearing.

    Crankshaft End Play Standard: 0.07 ~ 0.25 mm (0.0028 ~ 0.0098 in.)

  3. Inspect the main journals and crankpin journals. Using a micrometer, measure the diameter of each main journal and crankpin journal. Main journal diameter: 54.942 ~ 54.960 mm (2.16307 ~ 2.16378 in.) Crankpin diameter: 44.954 ~ 44.972 mm (1.76984 ~ 1.77055 in.)

Installation

  1. Install the crankshaft main bearings.
    1. Align the tab of the bearing with the groove in the cylinder block, then press in the upper five bearings (A).
    2. Align the tab of the bearing with the groove in the lower case (B), then install the lower five bearings (A).
  2. Install the thrust washers. Install the two thrust bearings (A) on both sides of the No. 3 journal, with the oil grooves facing outward from the cylinder block.
  3. Install the crankshaft (A) on the cylinder block.
  4. Apply liquid gasket to the upper surface of the lower case.
    1. Use a scraper to remove the old sealant from the sealing surfaces.
    2. The gasket application area on the lower case and cylinder block must be free of foreign material, oil, dust and moisture. Spray cleaner onto the surface and wipe with a clean cloth.
    3. Install a new rubber gasket (A) on the lower case.
    4. Apply liquid gasket to the lower part of the cylinder block. The gasket must be applied continuously to prevent oil leakage. Bead width: 2.5 ~ 3.5 mm (0.10 ~ 0.14 in.) Sealant: Threebond 1217H or equivalent
  5. Place the lower case on the cylinder block.
  6. Install the main bearing cap bolts.
Using the special service tool (09221-4A000), install and tighten the 10 main bearing cap bolts several times in the sequence shown. Tightening torque Step 1: 27.5 ~ 31 N·m Step 2: 120 ~ 125°
  7. Install the lower case bolts several times, following the sequence shown.

    Tightening Torque: 18.6 ~ 24 N·m

Make sure the crankshaft rotates freely.
  8. Check the crankshaft end play.
  9. Install the CKPS (Crankshaft Position Sensor) (B).

    Tightening torque: 9.8–11.8 N·m

  10. Install the OPS (Oil Pressure Switch) (A).

    Tightening torque: 9.8–11.8 N·m

  11. Install the remaining parts in the reverse order of removal.
