Jump Starting
Jump starting can be dangerous if it is not done correctly. Follow the jump starting procedure in this section to avoid serious injury or damage to your vehicle. If you are unsure how to properly jump start your vehicle, have a service technician or towing service do it for you.
WARNING
To avoid SERIOUS INJURY or DEATH to yourself or others, always follow these precautions when working near or handling the battery:
Always read and follow the instructions carefully when handling the battery.
Wear protective goggles designed to protect your eyes from acid spray.
Keep all flames, sparks, and smoking materials away from the battery.
Hydrogen gas is always present in battery cells. It is highly flammable and may explode if ignited.
Keep batteries out of the reach of children.
Batteries contain sulfuric acid, which is very corrosive. Do not allow acid to contact eyes, skin, or clothing.
If acid gets in the eyes, flush the eyes with clean water for at least 15 minutes and get immediate medical attention. If acid gets on the skin, wash the area thoroughly. If you feel pain or burning, see a doctor immediately.
- • When lifting a plastic-cased battery, excessive pressure on the case may cause battery acid to leak. Lift the battery using the opposite corners by hand.
- • Do not attempt to start your vehicle if the battery is frozen.
- • NEVER attempt to recharge the battery while the jumper cables are connected to the battery.
- • The ignition system operates at high voltage. NEVER touch these components while the engine is running or when the ignition key is in the ON position.
Jump Starting Procedure
1. Position the vehicles close enough so that the jumper cables can reach. Do not allow the vehicles to touch each other.
2. Avoid fans or any moving parts in the engine compartment at all times, even when the vehicles are off.
3. Turn off all electrical devices, such as the radio, lights, air conditioner, etc., in both vehicles. Place the transmission in P (Park) and apply the parking brake. Turn off both vehicles.
4. Open the engine hood.
CAUTION
Before connecting the jumper cables, make sure you correctly identify the positive (+) and negative (-) terminals to avoid reverse polarity connections.

5. Connect the jumper cables in the exact sequence shown in the illustration. First, connect one end of the first jumper cable to the positive (+) battery terminal of your vehicle 1 .
6. Connect the other end of the first jumper cable to the positive (+) battery/jump terminal of the assisting vehicle 2 .
7. Connect one end of the second jumper cable to the negative (-) battery/jump terminal of the assisting vehicle 3 .
8. Connect the other end of the second jumper cable to a ground on the chassis of your vehicle 4 .
Do not allow the jumper cables to contact anything other than the correct battery or jump terminal or the correct ground. Do not lean over the battery when making connections.
WARNING
Do not connect the jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the discharged battery. A spark may cause the battery to explode, resulting in personal injury or vehicle damage.
9. Start the engine of the assisting vehicle and let it run at approximately 2000 rpm for several minutes. Then start your vehicle.
10. Keep the vehicle running for at least 30 minutes at idle or while driving to ensure your battery receives enough charge to start on its own after the vehicle is shut off. A completely discharged battery may require up to 60 minutes of operation to fully recharge. If the vehicle is running at low speed, the vehicle may not restart.
If your vehicle does not start after several attempts, service is likely required. Have your vehicle inspected by an authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
Disconnect the jumper cables in the exact reverse order from which you connected them:
1. Disconnect the jumper cable from the ground on the chassis of your vehicle 4 .
2. Disconnect the other end of the jumper cable from the negative (-) battery/jump terminal of the assisting vehicle 3 .
3. Disconnect the second jumper cable from the positive (+) battery/jump terminal of the assisting vehicle 2 .
4. Disconnect the other end of the jumper cable from the positive (+) battery terminal of your vehicle 1 .
Information
Always dispose of used batteries in accordance with local laws or regulations.
NOTICE
To prevent damage to your vehicle:
- • Use only a 12-volt power source (battery or jump system) to jump start your vehicle.
- • Do not attempt to start your vehicle by push starting.
WARNING
When starting the vehicle with an external power source, do not allow the positive (+) and negative (-) cables to contact each other. Sparks may cause personal injury.
