Proper seat adjustment and a comfortable position play an important role in the safety of the driver and passengers. Proper seating, fastened seat belts, and airbag protection work together to provide safety in the event of a collision.

WARNING

Do not use a cushion that reduces friction between the seat and the passenger. The passenger's hips may slide under the lap portion of the seat belt during a crash or sudden stop.

Serious or fatal internal injuries may result because the seat belt cannot function properly.

Airbags

You can take steps to reduce the risk of injury from airbag deployment. Sitting too close to the airbag increases the risk of injury if the airbag inflates.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recommends that drivers maintain at least 10 inches (25 cm) between the center of the steering wheel and the chest.

WARNING

To reduce the risk of serious injury or death from airbag deployment:

  • Adjust the driver's seat as far back as possible while still maintaining your ability to control the vehicle.
  • Adjust the front passenger seat as far back as possible.
  • Hold the steering wheel at the 9 and 3 o'clock positions to minimize the risk of arm and hand injuries.
  • Never place anything or anyone between you and the airbag.
  • Do not allow the front passenger to place their feet or legs on the instrument panel to minimize the risk of leg injuries.

Seat Belts

Always fasten your seat belt before starting any trip. At all times, passengers must sit upright and be properly restrained by the seat belt. Infants and small children must be secured in appropriate child restraint systems.

WARNING

To avoid serious injury or death:

  • Never use one seat belt for more than one occupant.
  • Always keep the seatback upright with the lap portion of the seat belt snug and low on the hips.
  • Never allow children or small infants to ride on a passenger's lap.
  • Do not route the seat belt across the neck, across sharp edges, or position the shoulder belt away from your body.
  • Do not allow the seat belt to become pinched or caught.
