Driving Your Vehicle

Using ABS

~2min read

To get the maximum benefit from ABS in an emergency, do not try to modulate brake pressure or pump the brakes. Depress the brake pedal as firmly as possible.

When you apply the brake under conditions that may lock the wheels, you may hear brake noise or feel a corresponding sensation in the brake pedal. This is normal and means that your ABS is active.

The ABS does not reduce the time or distance needed to stop the vehicle. Always maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.

ABS cannot prevent skidding caused by sudden changes of direction, such as entering a curve too fast or changing lanes abruptly. Always drive at a safe speed for the road and weather conditions.

ABS cannot prevent loss of directional stability. Always hold the steering wheel firmly when braking hard. Sudden or excessive steering may cause your vehicle to slide into oncoming traffic or leave the road.

On loose or uneven road surfaces, the operation of the anti-lock brake system may result in a longer stopping distance than vehicles equipped with a conventional brake system. The ABS warning light () will illuminate for several seconds after the ignition switch is turned to the ON position.

During this time, the ABS performs a self-check, and the light turns off if everything is normal. If the light remains on, you may have a problem with your ABS. Contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

WARNING

If the ABS warning light ( ) stays illuminated, there may be a problem with the ABS. Your power brakes will function normally. To reduce the risk of serious injury or death, contact an HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

CAUTION

When driving on a road with poor traction, such as an icy road, and applying the brakes continuously, the ABS will remain active and the ABS warning light ( ) may illuminate. Pull your vehicle over to a safe place and turn the engine off. Restart the engine. If the ABS warning light does not illuminate, your ABS system is functioning normally. Otherwise, there may be a problem with the ABS system. Contact an authorized HYUNDAI dealer as soon as possible.

✽ NOTICE

When you start your vehicle from an external power source due to a discharged battery, the ABS warning light ( ) may illuminate at the same time. This is caused by low battery voltage. It does not mean that your ABS is malfunctioning. Charge the battery before driving the vehicle.
