FUEL REQUIREMENTS - DIESEL ENGINE

~1min read

Federal law requires that you fuel this vehicle with ultra-low sulfur highway diesel fuel (maximum 15 ppm sulfur) and prohibits the use of low sulfur highway diesel fuel (maximum 500 ppm sulfur) to avoid damage to the emissions control system.

Use good quality diesel fuel from a reliable supplier in your vehicle. For most year-round service, No. 2 diesel fuel meeting ASTM (formerly known as American Society for Testing and Materials) specification D-975 Grade S15 will provide good performance. If the vehicle is exposed to severe cold (below 20°F or -7°C), or is required to operate in colder than normal conditions for extended periods, use winterized No. 2 diesel fuel or dilute No. 2 diesel fuel with 50% No. 1 diesel fuel. This will provide better protection against fuel gelling or clogging of the fuel filters with wax.

Diesel fuel is rarely completely free of water. To prevent fuel system malfunction, drain accumulated water from the fuel/water separator using the drain located on the fuel filter housing. If you purchase good quality fuel and follow the cold weather recommendations above, fuel conditioners should not be required in your vehicle. Premium diesel fuel with a high cetane number, if available in your region, may offer improved cold starting and warm-up performance.
