Trailer Towing Maintenance

~1min read

Your vehicle will require maintenance more often if you regularly tow a trailer. Important items to pay particular attention to include engine oil, transmission fluid, axle lubricant, and engine coolant. Brake condition is another important item to check frequently. Each item is described in this manual, and the index will help you find them quickly. If you tow a trailer, it is recommended that you review these sections before starting your trip.

Do not forget to also maintain your trailer and hitch. Follow the maintenance schedule that came with your trailer and check it periodically. It is advisable to perform an inspection at the beginning of each day of driving. Most importantly, all hitch nuts and bolts must be tightened.

CAUTION

  • Due to the higher load when towing a trailer in hot conditions or while driving uphill, the engine may overheat. If the coolant temperature gauge indicates overheating, turn off the air conditioner and stop the vehicle in a safe place to cool the engine.
  • When towing, check the transmission fluid more frequently.
  • If your vehicle is not equipped with air conditioning, you should install a condenser fan to improve engine performance when towing a trailer.
