General Precautions

Please read the following precautions carefully before performing service on the airbag system. Follow the instructions described in this manual, otherwise the airbags may deploy accidentally and cause damage or injury.
  • Except when inspecting electrical equipment, always turn the ignition OFF, disconnect the negative battery cable, and wait at least three minutes before beginning work.
  • Use replacement parts manufactured to the same standards as original parts, or genuine parts. Do not install used SRS parts from another vehicle. Use only new parts when servicing the SRS.
  • Carefully inspect any SRS component before installation. Do not install any part that shows signs of being dropped or mishandled, such as dents, cracks, or deformation.
  • Before removing any SRS component (including disconnecting connectors), always disconnect the SRS connector.
Handling and Storage of Air Bags Do not disassemble the air bag module. It contains no serviceable parts. Once an air bag has been deployed, it cannot be repaired or reused. Observe the following precautions when temporarily storing an air bag module during service.
  • Store the removed airbag with the pad facing up.
  • Do not allow oil, grease, cleaning agents or water to contact the airbag unit to prevent damage to the airbag assembly.
  • Store a removed air bag module on a secure, level surface away from any heat source above 85 °C (185 °F).
  • Never perform electrical tests on airbags, such as measuring resistance.
  • Do not stand in front of the air bag module during removal, inspection, or installation.
  • Refer to the disposal procedures to dispose of a damaged air bag.
  • Be careful not to damage the SRS unit or the side impact sensors or front impact sensors when the ignition is ON. Wait at least three minutes after turning the ignition OFF before beginning work.
  • During installation or replacement, be careful not to strike the area around the SRS unit, the side impact sensors, and the front impact sensors with an impact wrench, hammer, etc. The air bags may deploy accidentally and cause damage or injury.
  • Replace the front air bag module, SRSCM, and FIS if the front air bag has deployed. Replace the SRS wiring if it is damaged. Replace the side air bag module, curtain air bag module, SRSCM, and SIS if the side air bag has deployed. Replace the air bag wiring if it is damaged.
  • After a collision in which the air bags or side air bags have not deployed, inspect the SRS unit, front impact sensor, and side impact sensors for damage or deformation. If damaged, replace the SRS unit, front impact sensor, and/or side impact sensors.
  • Do not disassemble the SRS unit, front impact sensor or side impact sensors.
  • Turn the ignition OFF, disconnect the negative battery cable, and wait at least three minutes before beginning installation or replacement of the SRS unit.
  • Make sure the SRS unit, front impact sensor, and side impact sensors are securely fastened with their mounting bolts.
  • Do not spill water or oil on the SRS unit, front impact sensor, or side impact sensors, and protect them from dust.
  • Store the SRS unit, front impact sensor, and side impact sensors in a cool (15 to 25 °C / 59 to 77 °F) and dry (30 to 80 % relative humidity, no moisture) area.
Precautions for Connecting SRS wiring can be identified by its special yellow outer covering. Follow the instructions described in this section.
  • Never attempt to modify, splice, or repair SRS wiring. If there is an open or damaged SRS wire, replace the harness.
  • Make sure the harness wires are routed so they are not pinched or interfere with other parts.
  • Make sure all SRS ground points are clean and the grounds are securely fastened for optimal metal-to-metal contact. Poor grounding may cause intermittent problems that are difficult to diagnose.
Electrical Inspection Precautions
  • When using electrical test equipment, insert the tester probe from the wire side of the connector. Do not insert the tester probe into the terminal side of the connector, and do not disturb the connector.
  • Use a U-shaped probe. Do not force the probe into the connector.
  • Use the specified service connectors for troubleshooting. Using improper tools may cause an inspection error due to poor metal contact.
Spring-Loaded Lock Connector: Some SRS connectors have a spring-loaded lock. Airbag connector

Disconnection

To unlock the connector lock, pull the spring-loaded sleeve (A) and slider (B) while holding the opposite half of the connector. Then disconnect the connector halves. Be sure to pull on the sleeve and not on the connector.

Connection

While holding both connector halves, press until the projection (C) on the sleeve-side connector snaps into place and locks.
