What to Do in an Emergency

Emergency Equipment

~2min read

Your vehicle contains some emergency equipment to help you respond to an emergency.

Fire Extinguisher

If there is a small fire and you know how to use a fire extinguisher, carefully follow these steps.

1. Pull the pin at the top of the fire extinguisher, which holds the handle to prevent accidental discharge.

2. Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.

3. Stand approximately 2.5 m (8 ft) away from the fire and squeeze the handle to discharge the fire extinguisher. If you release the handle, the discharge will stop.

4. Sweep the nozzle back and forth across the base of the fire. After the fire appears to be out, keep watching it closely, as it may re-ignite.

First Aid Kit

Some items, such as scissors, bandages, and adhesive tape, are included in the first aid kit.

Warning Triangle

Place the warning triangle on the road to warn approaching vehicles during emergencies, such as when your vehicle is parked on the shoulder due to a problem.

Tire Pressure Monitoring System (if equipped)

Tires normally lose air day-to-day, and you may need to add a few psi periodically. This is not normally a sign of a leaking tire. Always check tire pressure when the tires are cold, because tire pressure increases with temperature.

To check the tire pressure, perform the following steps. Steps:

1. Unscrew the valve cap, located on the tire rim.
2. Press and hold the gauge against the tire valve. Some air will escape when you start, and more will escape if you do not press the gauge firmly.
3. A firm, airtight push activates the gauge.
4. Read the tire pressure on the gauge to determine whether the tire pressure is low or high.
5. Adjust the tire pressure to the specified pressure. Refer to "Tires and Wheels" in chapter 8.
6. Install the valve cap.
