Safety Features of Your Vehicle

Older children

~1min read

Children who are too large for a child restraint system should always ride in the rear seat and use the available lap/shoulder belt. The lap portion of the belt must be fastened and worn snugly across the hips and as low as possible. Check the belt fit periodically. Child fidgeting may move the belt out of position. Children are safest in a crash when properly restrained in a rear seat. If an older child (over 12 years) must ride in the front seat, the child must be securely restrained by the available lap/shoulder belt and the seat must be moved to the rearmost position. Children 12 years old and under must be secured in the rear seat. NEVER place a child under 12 years old in the front seat. NEVER install a rear-facing child seat in the front seat of the vehicle.

If the shoulder belt portion lightly touches the child's neck or face, try moving the child closer to the center of the vehicle. If the shoulder belt still touches their face or neck, they must be returned to a child restraint system.

WARNING! Shoulder Belts on Small Children

  • Never allow the shoulder belt to contact a child's neck or face while the vehicle is in motion.
  • If seat belts are not properly fastened and adjusted for children, there is a risk of death or serious injury.
