Maintenance

3. Exhaust Emission Control System

~3min read

The exhaust emission control system is a highly efficient system that controls exhaust emissions while maintaining good vehicle performance.

Vehicle Modifications

This vehicle must not be modified. Modifying your vehicle may affect its performance, safety or durability and may even violate government safety and emission regulations. In addition, damage or performance problems resulting from any modification may not be covered by the warranty.

  • Using unauthorized electronic devices may cause the vehicle to malfunction, wiring damage, battery discharge and fire. For your safety, do not use unauthorized electronic devices.

Precautions for Engine Exhaust Gas (Carbon Monoxide)

• Carbon monoxide may be present along with other exhaust gases. Therefore, if you smell exhaust gas of any kind inside your vehicle, have it inspected and repaired immediately. If you ever suspect exhaust gas is entering your vehicle, drive it only with all windows fully open. Have your vehicle inspected and repaired immediately.

WARNING

Exhaust

Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide (CO). Although colorless and odorless, it is dangerous and may be fatal if inhaled. Follow the instructions on this page to avoid CO poisoning.

  • Do not operate the engine in enclosed or semi-enclosed areas (such as garages) any longer than necessary to drive the vehicle in or out of the area.
  • When the vehicle is stopped in an open area for more than a short time with the engine running, adjust the ventilation system (as necessary) to draw outside air into the vehicle.
  • Never sit in a parked or stopped vehicle for any extended period of time with the engine running.
  • When the engine stalls or does not start, excessive attempts to restart the engine may cause damage to the emission control system.

Catalytic Converter Operating Precautions

WARNING

Fire

  • The hot exhaust system may ignite flammable objects under the vehicle. Do not park the vehicle over or near flammable objects such as grass, vegetation, paper, leaves, etc.
  • The exhaust system and catalytic converter are very hot while the engine is running or immediately after the engine is turned off. Keep away from the exhaust system and catalytic converter to avoid burns. Also, do not remove heat shields around the exhaust system, do not undercoat the vehicle, or do not apply rust-proofing to the underbody. This may create a fire hazard under certain conditions.

Your vehicle is equipped with a catalytic converter emission control device. Therefore, the following precautions must be observed:

  • Be sure to fuel your vehicle in accordance with the "Fuel Requirements" on page 1-03.
  • Do not drive the vehicle when signs of engine malfunction exist, such as engine misfiring or noticeable loss of performance.
  • Do not use or abuse the engine. Examples of misuse include turning the ignition off and coasting down a steep grade in gear with the ignition off. • Do not run the engine at high idle speed for a long time (5 minutes or more).
  • Do not alter or tamper with any part of the engine or emission control system. All inspections and adjustments must be performed by a professional repair shop. Kia recommends visiting an authorized Kia dealer/service center.
  • Avoid driving with a very low fuel level. Running out of fuel may cause engine misfires, which can damage the catalytic converter.

Failure to observe these precautions may damage the catalytic converter and your vehicle. In addition, such actions may void your warranty.
