Seat Belt Restraint System

~8min read

WARNING

  • For maximum restraint protection, seat belts must always be used whenever the vehicle is moving.
  • Seat belts are most effective when the seatbacks are in an upright position.
  • Children aged 12 years and younger must always be properly restrained in the rear seat. Never allow children to ride in the front passenger seat. If a child older than 12 years must sit in the front seat, they must be properly belted and the seat should be moved as far back as possible.
  • Never wear the shoulder belt under your arm or behind your back. An incorrect shoulder belt position may cause serious injury in a crash. The shoulder belt should be positioned across the middle of your shoulder and over your collarbone.
  • Never place fragile objects under the seat belt. In the event of sudden braking or impact, the seat belt may damage them.
  • Avoid using twisted seat belts. A twisted belt cannot perform its function properly. In a collision it may even cut into you. Make sure the belt webbing is flat and not twisted.
  • Be careful not to damage the seat belt webbing or hardware. If the seat belt webbing or hardware is damaged, replace it.

WARNING

Seat belts are designed to fit the bone structure of the body and should be worn low across the hips or pelvis, and across the chest and shoulders where applicable. The lap portion of the belt should not be worn across the abdominal area.

Seat belts should be adjusted as closely as possible to fit comfortably, in order to provide the protection for which they were designed.

Belt sag significantly reduces the protection provided to the occupant. Take care to prevent the belt webbing from contamination by polishes, oils and chemicals, especially battery acid.

Cleaning can be safely performed using mild soap and water. The belt should be replaced if the webbing becomes worn, contaminated or damaged.

The entire belt assembly must be replaced after it has been subjected to a severe impact, even if damage is not apparent. Belts must not be worn with twisted webbing. Each seat belt assembly must be used by one occupant only; it is dangerous to fasten a seat belt around a child being held on a passenger's lap.

WARNING

  • No modifications or additions shall be made by the user that would prevent the seat belt adjusting devices from operating, eliminate slack, or prevent the seat belt assembly from being adjusted to remove slack.
  • When fastening the seat belt, be careful not to latch the buckle of another seat belt. This is very dangerous, and you cannot be properly protected by the seat belt.
  • Do not unfasten the seat belt, or fasten and unfasten the seat belt repeatedly while driving. This may cause loss of control and result in a fatal accident, serious injury or property damage.
  • When fastening the seat belt, make sure the seat belt does not pass over hard objects, or it may easily break.
  • Make sure the buckle is latched. The seat belt may not be securely fastened.

Front Seat Belt Warning

As a reminder for the front seat belts, the front seat belt warning lights will illuminate for approximately 6 seconds each time the ignition switch is turned ON, regardless of whether the belt is fastened.

If you do not fasten your seat belt and you are driving at a speed below 20 km/h, the warning light will remain on until the belt is fastened.

If you do not fasten your seat belt and you are driving at a speed above 20 km/h, the seat belt warning chime will sound for approximately 100 seconds and the corresponding warning light will flash.

If you unfasten your seat belt while driving below 20 km/h, the seat belt warning light will remain on until the seat belt is fastened.

WARNING

Riding in an incorrect position adversely affects the front seat belt warning system. It is important for the driver to instruct the passenger to sit properly in accordance with the instructions in this manual.

NOTICE

Front passenger seat belt warning (if equipped)

  • The front passenger seat belt warning light is located in the center of the instrument panel.
  • Even when the front passenger seat is unoccupied, the seat belt warning light will flash or remain on for 6 seconds.
  • The front passenger seat belt reminder may activate when baggage is placed on the front passenger seat.

Rear Seat Passenger Seat Belt Warning

As a reminder for the rear seat belts, the rear seat belt warning lights will illuminate for approximately 6 seconds each time the ignition is turned ON, regardless of whether the belt is fastened.

Then, the corresponding rear seat unfastened belt warning light will remain on for approximately 35 seconds if any of the following occurs:

- You start the engine when the rear seat belt is not fastened.
- You drive at a speed above 9 km/h when the rear seat belt is not fastened.
- The rear seat belt is unfastened while driving at a speed below 20 km/h.

If the rear seat belt is fastened, the warning light will turn off immediately. If the rear seat belt is unfastened while driving at a speed above 20 km/h, the corresponding unfastened seat belt warning light will flash and a warning chime will sound for 35 seconds.

However, if the rear passenger knee/shoulder belt is fastened and unfastened twice within 9 seconds after the belt is fastened, the corresponding seat belt warning light will not operate.

Lap/Shoulder Belt

Height Adjustment (Front Seat, if equipped)

You can adjust the height of the shoulder belt anchor to one of 3 positions for maximum comfort and safety. The height of the adjustable seat belt should not be too close to the neck. The shoulder portion should be adjusted so that it lies across the chest and in the middle of the shoulder, close to the door, not the neck.

To adjust the seat belt height, press the release button, then move the height adjuster up or down to the desired position.

To raise the height adjuster, pull it upward (1). To lower it, press it (3) while pressing the height adjustment button (2). Release the button to lock the anchor in position. Try moving the height adjuster to make sure it is locked in position.

Improperly worn seat belts may result in serious injury in an accident.

WARNING

  • Make sure the shoulder belt anchor is locked in the appropriate height position. Never position the shoulder belt across the neck or face.
  • Failure to replace seat belts promptly after an accident may leave you with damaged seat belts that will not provide protection in the event of another collision, leading to personal injury or death. Replace your seat belts as soon as possible after an accident.

To fasten the seat belt:

To fasten the seat belt, pull it out of the retractor and insert the metal tongue (1) into the buckle (2). An audible "click" will be heard when the tongue locks into the buckle.

The seat belt automatically adjusts to the correct length only after the lap portion is manually adjusted to fit snugly over the hips. If you lean forward slowly with a light movement, the belt will extend and allow you to move. However, if there is a sudden stop or impact, the belt will lock in position. It will also lock if you attempt to lean forward too quickly.

NOTICE

If you cannot pull the seat belt out of the retractor, firmly pull the belt and release it. Then the belt can be pulled out smoothly.

WARNING

Position the lap portion of the seat belt as low and snug as possible over the hips, not over the waist. If the lap belt is positioned too high on the waist, the risk of injury in a collision may increase. Neither hand should be placed under or over the belt. Instead, the hand should be placed under the belt as shown in the illustration.

Never fasten the seat belt under the arm nearest the door.

Rear Center Seat Belt:

Always hold the tongue plate (1) and buckle (2) locked. Pull the metal tongue (3) and insert it (3) into the buckle (4). An audible "click" will be heard when the tongue locks into the buckle. Make sure the belt is not twisted.

When using the rear center seat belt, the buckle marked "CENTER" must be used.

To unfasten the seat belt:

To release the seat belt, press the release button (A) on the buckle. When released, the belt should automatically retract into the retractor.

If this does not occur, check the belt to make sure it is not twisted, then try again.

Lap Belt

To fasten the seat belt:

To fasten the 2-point static-type seat belt, insert the metal tongue (1) into the buckle (2). An audible "click" will be heard when the tongue locks into the buckle. Make sure the belt is securely latched and not twisted.

With the 2-point static-type seat belt, the length must be adjusted manually to fit snugly against the body. Fasten the belt and pull the free end to tighten.

The belt should be positioned as low as possible over the hips (1), not over the waist. If the belt is too high, the risk of injury in an accident may increase.

When using the rear center seat belt, the buckle marked "CENTER" must be used.

To unfasten the seat belt:

To release the seat belt, press the button (1) on the buckle.

WARNING

The locking mechanism of the center lap belt differs from that of the rear seat shoulder belts. When fastening the rear seat shoulder belts or the center lap belt, make sure they are inserted into the correct buckles for maximum protection from the seat belt system and to ensure proper operation.

Stowing the Rear Seat Belt

The rear seat belt buckles can be stored in the pocket between the rear seatback and cushion when not in use.
