Driving Your Vehicle

Proper Braking Practice

~2min read

  • Make sure the parking brake is released and the parking brake indicator light goes off before driving.
  • When driving through water, the brakes may get wet. They may also get wet when the vehicle is washed. Wet brakes can be dangerous! Your vehicle will not stop as quickly if the brakes are wet. Wet brakes may cause the vehicle to pull to one side. To dry the brakes, lightly apply the brake pedal until normal braking action returns, while keeping the vehicle under control at all times. If normal braking action does not return, stop as soon as it is safe to do so and contact an authorized Kia dealer for assistance.
  • Never coast down a slope with the vehicle in neutral. This is extremely dangerous. Always keep the vehicle in gear, use the brakes to slow down, and then shift to a lower gear so that engine braking helps you maintain a safe speed.
  • Do not "pump" the brake pedal. Resting your foot on the brake pedal while driving can be dangerous, as the brakes may overheat and lose effectiveness. It also increases wear on brake system components.
  • If a tire goes flat while driving, apply the brake pedal gently and keep the vehicle pointed straight ahead while slowing down. When you are moving slowly enough to do so safely, steer off the road and stop in a safe place.
  • If your vehicle is equipped with an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT), do not let the vehicle creep forward. To prevent creeping, firmly depress the brake pedal while the vehicle is stopped.
  • Be careful when parking on a hill. Firmly apply the parking brake and place the shift lever in P (Intelligent Variable Transmission) or in first or reverse gear (manual transmission). If your vehicle is facing downhill, turn the front wheels toward the curb to prevent the vehicle from rolling. If your vehicle is facing uphill, turn the front wheels away from the curb to prevent the vehicle from rolling. If there is no curb or if other conditions require it, place wheel chocks under the wheels.
  • In some cases, the parking brake may freeze in the applied position. This most often occurs when snow or ice accumulates around the rear brakes, or if the brakes are wet. If there is a risk that the parking brake may freeze, apply it only temporarily while placing the shift lever in P (Intelligent Variable Transmission) or in first or reverse gear (manual transmission), and block the rear wheels so the vehicle cannot roll. Then release the parking brake.
  • Do not hold the vehicle on a slope using the accelerator pedal. This may cause the transmission to overheat. Always use the brake pedal or the parking brake.
