WARNING

Do not turn off the front passenger airbag unless necessary: Turning off the front passenger airbag unnecessarily compromises safety. The passenger will not be adequately protected by the airbag, which may result in serious injury or even death. Except when installing a child seat on the front seat, do not set the airbag switch to the OFF position.

The airbag switch should be used to turn off the front and side airbags, as well as the front passenger seatbelt pretensioner, when installing a child seat on the front passenger seat.

When the ignition key is turned to the ON position, both front passenger airbag indicator lights come on, regardless of the position of the passenger airbag switch. The indicator light goes off after a set time, and then turns on or off depending on the circumstances listed in the table.

CAUTION

If any of the following circumstances occur, contact a qualified service center to have the front passenger airbag switch checked. We recommend an Authorized Mazda Dealer:

  • The front passenger airbag OFF indicator light does not come on briefly after the ignition key is turned to the ON position.

  • The front passenger airbag OFF indicator light does not go off after a short period of time when the ignition switch is in the ON position and the front passenger airbag switch is in the ON position.

Switch positions

Before driving, always check that the front passenger airbag switch is set to the position that suits your needs.

WARNING

Do not leave the key in the front passenger airbag switch: Accidentally turning off the front passenger airbag is dangerous. In a collision, a passenger seated in the front seat will not be properly protected. This may result in serious injury or even death. To prevent accidental deactivation, always use the auxiliary key attached to the currently used smart key to turn off the airbag. After turning it off, put the auxiliary key back onto the smart key. This way you will never leave the key in the front passenger airbag switch.

CAUTION

After turning off the front passenger airbag, put the auxiliary key back onto the smart key.

OFF

The front and side airbags for the front passenger and the seatbelt pretensioner are deactivated.

Turning off the front passenger airbag

1. Insert the ignition key into the airbag switch and turn it clockwise until it is in the OFF position.

2. Remove the key.

3. Check that the airbag OFF indicator light remains on when the ignition switch is in the ON position.

The front and side airbags for the front passenger and the seatbelt pretensioner will remain deactivated until the airbag switch is turned to the ON position.

ON

The front and side airbags for the front passenger and the seatbelt pretensioner are activated. Operate the system only when there is no child seat on the front passenger seat.

Turning on the front passenger airbag

1. Insert the ignition key into the airbag switch and turn it counterclockwise to the ON position.

2. Remove the key.

3. Check that the airbag OFF indicator light remains on when the ignition switch is in the ON position. The airbag OFF indicator light goes off after a short period of time.
