Jump starting

Jump starting is dangerous if it is not done correctly.

Follow the instructions below carefully. If you are not certain how to perform a jump start, consult a qualified mechanic.

WARNING

précautions soigneusement:Follow these
precautions carefully:

For safe and correct handling of the battery, read the following precautions carefully before using or inspecting the battery.

la borne positive (+ ) entrer en contact avec tout objetDo not let the positive terminal (+)
contact any metal object that could cause a spark:

Flames or sparks near open battery cells are dangerous. Hydrogen, which is produced during normal battery operation, can ignite and cause the battery to explode. An exploding battery can cause severe burns and injuries. When working near a battery, do not let metal tools contact the positive (+) or negative (-) terminal of the battery.

Do not connect a booster battery to a frozen battery or to a battery with a low electrolyte level:

Connecting a booster battery to a frozen battery or to a battery with a low electrolyte level is dangerous. The battery may crack or explode and cause serious injury.

Connect the negative cable to a suitable ground point away from the battery:

Connecting the end of the second jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the discharged battery is dangerous.

A spark could ignite the gas around the battery and cause serious injury.

Route the battery cables away from moving parts:

Connecting a jumper cable near or to a moving component (cooling fans, belts) is dangerous. The cable may be struck when the engine starts and cause serious injury.

WARNING

Use only a 12 V booster source. Using a 24 V supply (two batteries connected in series or a 24 V generator) can cause serious damage to the 12 V starter motor, ignition system and other electrical components.

Démarrage avec batterie de secours

  1. Remove the battery cover.
Démarrage avec batterie de secours

  1. Make sure the booster battery is 12 V and that its negative terminal is grounded.
  2. If the booster battery is in another vehicle, make sure the two vehicles do not touch each other.
Turn off the engine of the booster vehicle and switch off all non-essential electrical loads in both vehicles.
  • Connect the cables in exactly the order shown in the illustration.
    • Connect one end of a cable to the positive terminal of the discharged battery (1).
    • Connect the other end to the positive terminal of the booster battery (2).
    • Connect one end of the other cable to the negative terminal of the booster battery (3).
    • Connect the other end to the ground point shown in the illustration, away from the discharged battery (4).
    1. Start the engine of the booster vehicle and let it run for a few minutes. Then start the engine of the other vehicle.
    2. When finished, carefully disconnect the cables in the reverse order of the illustration.
    3. If the battery cover was removed, reinstall it in the reverse order of removal.

    NOTE

Make sure the covers are properly installed.
