Engine oil
Points to observe: The quality of the engine oil is decisive for the proper functioning and service life of the engine. Based on extensive testing, Mercedes-Benz continuously approves engine oils that take current technical developments into account.
For Mercedes-Benz engines, therefore, use only engine oils approved by Mercedes-Benz.
For more information on tested and approved engine oils, contact a Mercedes-Benz service center.
Mercedes-Benz recommends having oil changes carried out by a qualified workshop. Mercedes-Benz approval is recognizable from the marking "MB approval" on the oil container and the corresponding specification (MB approval 229.51, for example).
An overview of approved engine oils is available on the website http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com by entering the specification, for example 229.5.
The table shows the engine oils approved for your vehicle.
| Petrol engines | MB approval |
B 180 [1]B 200 [1] |
229.3, 229.5, 229.51 |
| Diesel engines | MB approval |
B 180 CDI [1]B 200 CDI [1] |
228.51, 229.31, 229.51 |
- Petrol engines: MB approval 229.1 or ACEA A3
- Diesel engines: MB approval 229.1 or ACEA C3
In doing so, the single top-up quantity must not exceed 1.0 l.
Capacities
The following values apply to an oil change including filter replacement.
| Model | Fill quantity |
B 180 [1]B 200 [1] |
5,8 l |
B 180 CDI [1]B 200 CDI [1] |
7,0 l |
Additives
Do not add any additional additives to the engine oil. This could damage the engine.Engine oil viscosity

Viscosity describes the flow resistance of a liquid. For engine oil, high viscosity indicates a thick oil and low viscosity indicates a thin oil.
Choose the SAE (viscosity) grade of the engine oil according to the outside temperature. The table shows the SAE grades to use. At low outside temperatures, the thermal properties of engine oils can deteriorate significantly due to, for example, aging and deposits of soot and fuel caused by vehicle operation. We therefore strongly recommend carrying out regular oil changes with an approved engine oil of the appropriate SAE grade.
