Sunroof. Important safety notes. Sunroof reversing function. Operating the sunroof
The sunroof of the Mercedes E-Class (4th gen, W212, 2009–2016) offers not only fresh-air comfort but also safety features such as the reversing function, which protects against trapping. Drivers and passengers benefit from well-designed warnings that ensure responsible use of the sunroof. In addition, the rain-sensing closing feature provides extra protection in the event of a sudden change in weather.
Important Safety Notes
Your vehicle may be equipped with a sunroof or a panoramic sunroof. In this section, the term "sunroof" refers to both sunroof variants.
WARNINGWhen opening and closing, body parts can be trapped in the movement range of the sunroof. There is a risk of injury!
When opening and closing, make sure no body parts are in the movement range.
If someone becomes trapped,- release the switch immediately, or
- during automatic travel, briefly press the switch in any direction.
Opening or closing is stopped.
WARNINGIf children operate the sunroof, they can get trapped, especially when unsupervised. There is a risk of injury!
Always take the key with you when leaving the vehicle and lock the vehicle. Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.
NOTE
Only open the sunroof when it is free of snow and ice. Otherwise, malfunctions may occur.
Do not let objects protrude from the sunroof. The seals can be damaged.
Info
When the sunroof is open, resonance noises may occur in addition to the usual wind noise. These are caused by slight pressure fluctuations in the vehicle interior. To reduce or eliminate these noises, change the position of the sunroof or open a side window slightly.
Sunroof reversing function
Your vehicle may be equipped with a sunroof or a panoramic sunroof. In this section, the term "sunroof" refers to both sunroof variants.
The sunroof is equipped with an automatic reversing function. If a solid object prevents or restricts the sunroof from closing during the closing process, the sunroof automatically opens again. The automatic reversing function is only an aid and does not replace your attention when closing the sunroof.
WARNINGIn particular, the reversing function does not respond
- to soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small fingers
- during the last 4 mm of the closing travel
- during adjustment
- when the sunroof is closed manually again immediately after automatic reversing.
As a result, the reversing function cannot prevent pinching in these situations. Risk of injury!
When closing, make sure that no body parts are within the closing area.
If someone becomes trapped,- release the switch immediately, or
- during automatic closing, briefly press the switch in any direction.
The closing process is stopped.

Rain-sensing closing
If the key is in position 0 in the ignition lock or has been removed, the sunroof closes automatically- when rain begins
- in extreme outside temperatures
- after six hours
- in case of power supply faults
To continue ventilating the vehicle interior, the sliding roof then lifts at the rear.
Info
If the sliding roof closes with the "Rain closing" function and is blocked in the process, it reopens slightly. The "Rain closing" function is then deactivated.
The sliding roof does not close if it
- is raised at the rear
- is blocked
- it is not raining on the rain sensor's sensor field in the windshield. If the vehicle is parked, for example, under a bridge or in a carport, the sensor field may be covered.
