The side windows of the Mercedes E-Class (4th generation, W212, 2009–2016) offer not only comfort but also innovative safety features such as the reversing function. This function helps prevent pinching and contributes significantly to the safety of all occupants. Drivers should know these functions and use them responsibly to avoid injuries. Comfort opening also provides convenient ventilation of the interior in hot weather.

Important Safety Notes

WARNING

When opening a side window, body parts can be drawn in or pinched between the side window and the window frame. There is a risk of injury!

When opening, make sure nobody is touching the side window. If someone becomes trapped, release the switch immediately or pull the switch to close the side window again.

When closing a side window, body parts in the closing area can be pinched. There is a risk of injury!

When closing, make sure no body parts are in the closing area. If someone becomes trapped, release the switch immediately or press the switch to open the side window again.

WARNING

If children operate the side windows, they can become trapped, especially when unattended. There is a risk of injury!

Activate the child lock for the rear side windows. Always take the key with you when leaving the vehicle and lock the vehicle. Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.

Side window reversing function

The side windows are equipped with an automatic reversing function. If a solid object blocks or restricts a side window while it is closing, the side window opens again automatically. The automatic reversing function is only an aid and does not replace your attention when closing a side window.

WARNING

The reversing function does not respond

  • to soft, light and thin objects, e.g. small fingers
  • during the last 4 mm of the closing travel
  • during adjustment
  • when manually closing the side window again immediately after automatic reversing.

As a result, the reversing function cannot prevent pinching in these situations. Risk of injury!

When closing, make sure no body parts are in the closing area. If someone gets trapped, press the button to reopen the side window.

Opening and closing side windows

The buttons for all side windows are on the driver's door. In addition, each door has a button for its own side window.

The buttons on the driver's door have priority.

Turn the key in the ignition to position 1 or 2.

Manual opening: Press and hold the corresponding button.

Fully open: Press the corresponding switch past the pressure point and release it.
  • An automatic operation is started.

    Manual closing: Pull the corresponding button and hold it.

    Full close: Pull the corresponding button past the pressure point.
  • An automatic operation is started.

    Stop automatic operation: Operate the corresponding button again.

    If you operate the button past the pressure point, you start an automatic operation in the corresponding direction. You can stop the automatic operation by operating the button again.

    If you switch off the engine or remove the key, you can still operate the side windows. This function is available for five minutes or until you open the driver's or front passenger's door.

    If the child safety lock for the side windows is switched on, operation of the side windows from the rear seats is not possible.

    Comfort Open

    General Notes

    You can ventilate the vehicle before driving. To do this, perform the following functions simultaneously with the key:
    • Unlocking the Vehicle
    • Opening the side windows
    • Opening the sliding roof or panorama sliding roof and the sunshades
    • Switching on the driver's seat ventilation

    You can only trigger the "Comfort opening" function with the key. The key must be near the vehicle.

    The "Comfort opening" function is also available when the vehicle is unlocked.

    Comfort Open

    Press the buttonHold until the side windows and the sliding roof or panorama sliding roof reach the desired position.
  • If the sunshades of the panorama sliding roof are closed, the sunshades open first.

    Press the buttonPress again and hold until the panorama sliding roof reaches the desired position.

    Stop comfort opening: The buttonrelease.

    The side windows of the Mercedes E-Class W212 (model years 2009–2016) offer a high level of safety and comfort. The automatic reversing function protects against trapping and provides a reassuring driving experience. Nevertheless, attentiveness is essential when opening and closing.

    Thanks to well-designed functions such as comfort opening and the priority of the driver's door buttons, operating the windows is particularly simple and user-friendly. In this way, the Mercedes E-Class BR 212 remains a synonym for safety and comfort.
