Important safety information. Child restraint system. ISOFIX child seat mounting
Travel safely with the Mercedes E-Class (4th generation W212, 2009–2016): This article focuses on child restraint systems and ISOFIX mountings. Learn how children are best secured and which systems are recommended. Mercedes-Benz combines comfort and safety for your youngest passengers. Rely on tested protection solutions.
Important Safety Notes
Accident statistics show that children secured on the rear seats are safer than children secured on the front seats. For this reason, Mercedes-Benz strongly recommends installing the child restraint system preferably on a rear seat. The child is generally better protected there.
If you transport a child under twelve years old and under 1.50 m tall in the vehicle,- always secure the child in a child restraint system suitable for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. The child restraint system must be suitable for the child's age, weight and height
- be sure to observe the instructions and safety information in this section as well as the installation instructions of the child restraint system manufacturer.
Do not install a rear-facing child restraint system on the center rear seat.
WARNINGIf children are left unattended in the vehicle, they can set the vehicle in motion, for example by
- releasing the parking brake
- shifting the automatic transmission out of the P (Park) position or shifting the manual transmission into neutral
- starting the engine.
They may also operate vehicle equipment and become trapped. There is a risk of accident and injury!
Always take the key with you when leaving the vehicle and lock the vehicle. Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.
WARNINGIf people, especially children, are exposed to extreme heat or cold for extended periods, there is a risk of injury or even death! Never leave people, especially children, unattended in the vehicle.
WARNINGIf the child restraint system is exposed to direct sunlight, parts can become very hot. Children can burn themselves on these parts, especially on metal parts of the child restraint system. There is a risk of injury!
When you leave the vehicle with a child, always make sure the child restraint system is not exposed to direct sunlight. Protect it, e.g. with a blanket. If the child restraint system has been exposed to direct sunlight, let it cool down before you secure the child in it. Never leave children unattended in the vehicle.
Always make sure that all vehicle occupants are properly belted and seated correctly. Pay particular attention to this with children.
Observe the safety notes for the seat belt and the information on correct use of the seat belt.
Child restraint system
Do not install a rear-facing child restraint system on the center rear seat.
Be sure to observe the application range of the child restraint system.
For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recommends that you use only a child restraint system recommended by Mercedes-Benz.
WARNINGIf the child restraint system is installed incorrectly on a suitable seat position, it cannot provide the intended protection. The child may then not be restrained in an accident, during braking maneuvers or sudden changes of direction. There is an increased risk of injury or even death!
Be sure to observe the installation instructions from the manufacturer of the child restraint system as well as the application range. Make sure that the entire base of the child restraint system always rests on the seat cushion. Never place objects under or behind the child restraint system, e.g. cushions. Use child restraint systems only with the original cover provided. Replace damaged covers only with original covers.
WARNING
If the child restraint system is installed incorrectly or not secured, it can come loose in an accident, during braking maneuvers or sudden changes of direction. The child restraint system can be thrown around and strike vehicle occupants. There is an increased risk of injury or even death!
Always install child restraint systems correctly, even when they are not in use. Be sure to observe the installation instructions from the manufacturer of the child restraint system.
For further information on securely stowing objects, luggage or cargo, refer to "Loading Guidelines".
WARNINGDamaged child restraint systems or their anchorage systems, or those that have been subjected to load in an accident, cannot provide the intended protection. The child may then not be restrained in an accident, during braking maneuvers or sudden changes of direction. There is an increased risk of injury or even death!
Replace child restraint systems that are damaged or have been subjected to load in an accident immediately. Have the anchorage systems of the child restraint systems checked at a qualified specialist workshop before installing a child restraint system again.
Child restraint anchorage systems are:
- the seat belt system
- the ISOFIX attachment brackets
- the Top Tether anchorages.
If circumstances require placing a child on the front passenger seat, be sure to observe the information on "Child Restraint System on the Front Passenger Seat". It also contains information on deactivating the front passenger airbag.
Observe the warning labels located in the vehicle interior and on the child restraint system.
Info
For cleaning Mercedes-Benz recommended child restraint systems, it is best to use Mercedes-Benz care products. You can obtain information at any Mercedes-Benz Service Center.
ISOFIX child seat attachment
WARNINGISOFIX child restraint systems do not provide adequate protection for children weighing more than 22 kg who are secured with the child restraint system's integrated seat belt. For example, the child may not be restrained in an accident. There is an increased risk of injury or even death!
If the child weighs more than 22 kg, use only ISOFIX child restraint systems in which the child is secured with the seat belt of the vehicle seat position. Additionally secure the child restraint system with the Top Tether strap, if provided.
Be sure to observe the application range of the child restraint system and the installation and operating instructions from the manufacturer of the child restraint system you are using.
Always make sure before every trip that the ISOFIX child restraint system is correctly engaged in both ISOFIX attachment brackets.
NOTE
When installing the child restraint system, make sure you do not pinch the seat belt of the center seat. Otherwise the seat belt may be damaged.

When you install the ISOFIX child restraint system, the cover caps of the
ISOFIX attachment brackets
fold inward.
Install the ISOFIX child restraint system on both ISOFIX anchor bracketsISOFIX is a standardized attachment system for special child restraint systems on the rear seats. The ISOFIX attachment brackets
for two ISOFIX child restraint systems are installed on the left and right rear seats.
Secure child restraint systems without ISOFIX child seat attachment with the seat belts in the vehicle. Be sure to observe the application range of the child restraint system and the installation and operating instructions from the manufacturer of the child restraint system you are using.
The Mercedes E-Class W212 (model years 2009–2016) also sets standards for protecting children in the vehicle. ISOFIX attachments, Top Tether anchorages and recommendations for suitable child seats support the safe transport of children in all age and weight groups.
Clear instructions on the use and installation of child restraint systems give parents comprehensive support in the E-Class, ensuring peace of mind on every journey.
