Particulate filter (for diesel)
The diesel particulate filter system traps harmful soot particles in the engine exhaust gases. The system has a self-cleaning function that runs automatically while driving and without a warning. The filter is regularly cleaned by high-temperature combustion of the trapped soot particles. This process runs automatically under certain driving conditions and can last up to 25 minutes. It usually takes between 7 and 12 minutes. During this time, fuel consumption may increase. The development of smoke and odour is normal.

Under certain driving conditions, for example on short trips, the system cannot clean itself automatically.
If the filter needs cleaning and the previous driving conditions did not allow automatic cleaning, this will be indicated by the indicator
and CodE 55 in the
driver information centre. In vehicles with a higher-level display or higher-level combi display, a warning message appears on the display.
lights up when the
particulate filter is full. Start the cleaning process as soon as possible.
flashes and a warning tone
sounds several times when the diesel particulate filter has reached its maximum fill level. Start the cleaning process immediately to avoid engine damage.
Cleaning process
To start the cleaning process, keep driving and maintain an engine speed above
2000 rpm. Downshift if necessary.
The diesel particulate filter cleaning process is then started.
If
If the indicator also lights up or a
warning message appears on the higher-level display or higher-level combi display, cleaning is not possible. Contact a workshop.
Notice
If the cleaning process is interrupted, there is a risk of causing serious engine damage.
Cleaning takes place faster when engine speed and load are high.
Do not switch off the engine until the cleaning process is complete.
This is indicated by the indicator
off.
