Fault location tree

~7min read
ALP 1 No communication with the ECU

INSTRUCTIONS

Nothing to report.

Check the vehicle battery voltage.

Repair if necessary.

Try the diagnostic tool on another control module in the vehicle, or on another vehicle.
Remove fuse 5E (shared by Electric Power Steering and Airbag) and try to diagnose the system. If this is possible, the Electric Power Steering is in an unstable mode. To correct this:
  • switch to + after forced ignition or with the engine running
  • disconnect the power connector of the Electric Power Steering
  • reconnect the connector and check the connection by pushing and pulling on the connector
  • try again to enter diagnosis with the tool
  • if communication is possible, the fault is repaired
  • if the fault persists, carry out the following procedure

Check the condition of the connections of both Electric Power Steering connectors.

Check the fuses for the Electric Power Steering (70A), engine (70A) and passenger compartment (5A).

Check the insulation, continuity and absence of parasitic resistance of the harness between the battery and the variable-assist steering control module:

Black 2-way connector pin 1 → + battery
Black 2-way connector pin 2 → 0 V battery
Black 8-way connector pin 8 → + after ignition

Repair if necessary.

Carry out a diagnosis of the multiplexed network.
If the fault persists, contact your Techline.

AFTER REPAIR

Carry out a check with the diagnostic tool.

ALP 2 Loss of vehicle power assistance without warning

INSTRUCTIONS

Only consult this customer symptom after a complete check with the diagnostic tool.

If the Electric Power Steering fuse blows or power supply is lost, the vehicle no longer has power assistance.

The steering then behaves like a manual steering system: it can be steered while driving, even at low speed, but is very hard to turn when stationary.

As it is no longer powered, the Electric Power Steering control module cannot light the warning light, so the driver is not alerted to the fault.

The driver can then only detect the fault by feeling the loss of assistance through the steering wheel.

Check the condition of the fuses.

Replace the fuses if necessary.

Check the condition of the Electric Power Steering connectors and repair them if necessary. Check the control module supply voltage:

Black 2-way connector pin 1 → Vehicle earth
Black 8-way connector pin 8 → Vehicle earth

Repair if necessary.

Check the insulation, continuity and absence of parasitic resistance of the harness between the Electric Power Steering control module and the dashboard warning lights:

Black 8-way connector pin 4 → Multiplexed network
Black 8-way connector pin 6 → Multiplexed network

Make sure the steering column and steering rack are mechanically sound.

Repair if necessary.

Make sure the front suspension components, such as the steering ball joints and strut mounts, are mechanically sound.

Repair if necessary.

If the fault persists, contact your Techline.

AFTER REPAIR

Carry out a check with the diagnostic tool.

ALP 3 Poor power assistance feel

INSTRUCTIONS

Nothing to report.

Check the condition and pressure of the tyres, as well as the condition of the joints and the front axle geometry.
Check the condition and presence of the Electric Power Steering power fuse.

Repair if necessary.

Check the condition of the Electric Power Steering black 2-way power connector.

Repair if necessary.

Make sure configuration CF088 "Control module calibration" matches the vehicle equipment: wheel size, vehicle type and engine.

If necessary, configure the control module correctly using the diagnostic tool.

If the fault persists, contact your Techline.

AFTER REPAIR

Carry out a check with the diagnostic tool.

ALP 4 Steering wheel does not return to centre by itself at low speed (active centre return)

INSTRUCTIONS

Note: Active return is disabled.

Check the condition and pressure of the tyres, the condition of the joints and the front axle geometry.
Check the vehicle battery voltage.

Repair if necessary.

Make sure the steering wheel angle is correctly calibrated and consistent with the steering wheel position (state ET020 at 3 or 4).

If necessary, re-learn the steering wheel angle (configuration CF085).

If the fault persists, contact your Techline.

AFTER REPAIR

Carry out a check with the diagnostic tool.

ALP 5 Under-assistance at low speed and over-assistance at high speed

INSTRUCTIONS

Nothing to report.

Check the vehicle battery voltage.

Repair if necessary.

Carry out the following procedures to check the return of the vehicle speed information. Disconnect the control module connector and check the continuity, insulation and absence of parasitic resistance of the links:

Black 8-way connector pin 5 → CAN L line of the Body Central Unit (UCH)
Black 8-way connector pin 8 → CAN H line of the Body Central Unit (UCH)
CAN L line of the Anti-lock Braking System → CAN L line of the Body Central Unit (UCH)
CAN H line of the Anti-lock Braking System → CAN H line of the Body Central Unit (UCH)

Repair if necessary.

Carry out a multiplexed network test.

Repair if necessary.

Carry out a diagnosis of the Anti-lock Braking System to check conformity of PR003 "Vehicle speed".

Repair if necessary.

If the fault persists, contact your Techline.

AFTER REPAIR

Carry out a check with the diagnostic tool.

ALP 6 Assistance too weak

INSTRUCTIONS

Note: At the end of rotation travel, assistance is reduced after 5 seconds.

Check the condition and pressure of the tyres, the condition of the joints and the front axle geometry.
Check the vehicle battery voltage.

Repair if necessary.

Leave the Electric Power Steering without any demand for at least 1 hour.

Make sure that nothing placed in the area around the Electric Power Steering causes it to overheat abnormally.

If the fault persists, contact your Techline.

AFTER REPAIR

Carry out a check with the diagnostic tool.

ALP 7 Assistance available for 5 min after ignition off

INSTRUCTIONS

Note: This problem may occur if the multiplexed information on the engine running status is faulty

Check the vehicle battery voltage.

Repair if necessary.

Disconnect the control module connector and check the continuity, insulation and absence of parasitic resistance of the links:

Black 8-way connector pin 5 → CAN L line of the Body Central Unit (UCH)
Black 8-way connector pin 7 → CAN H line of the Body Central Unit (UCH)
CAN L line of the injection control module → CAN L line of the Body Central Unit (UCH)
CAN H line of the injection control module → CAN H line of the Body Central Unit (UCH)

Repair if necessary.

Carry out a multiplexed network test.

Repair if necessary.

Carry out a diagnosis of the injection system.

Repair if necessary.

If the fault persists, contact your Techline.

AFTER REPAIR

Carry out a check with the diagnostic tool.

ALP 8 Assistance available but "steering to be checked" warning message and service light steady or flashing at 8 Hz

INSTRUCTIONS

Nothing to report.

Check the vehicle battery voltage and the condition of the system connections.

Repair if necessary.

Check the steering angle sensor configuration.

If the sensor is not calibrated, perform a steering angle sensor learning procedure (procedure CF085).

If the fault persists, contact your Techline.

AFTER REPAIR

Carry out a check with the diagnostic tool.
