Inspection

Glass Antenna Test
  1. Wrap aluminum foil (A) around the tip of the tester probe (B), as shown in the illustration.
  2. Touch one tester probe to the glass antenna terminal (A) and move the other tester probe along the antenna wires to check for continuity.
Glass Antenna Repair
To make an effective repair, the broken section must be no longer than one inch.
  1. Lightly rub the area around the broken part (A) with fine steel wool, then clean it with alcohol.
  2. Carefully tape above and below the broken part of the glass antenna wire (B) with cellophane tape (C).
  3. Using a small brush, apply a thick layer of silver conductive paint (A) extending approximately 1/8 inch on both sides of the break. Allow 30 minutes to dry.
Stir the paint thoroughly before use.
  4. Check the continuity of the repaired wire.
  5. In the same way, apply a second layer of paint. Allow it to dry for three hours before removing the tape.
  6. Remove the rear pillar trim. (Refer to Body - "Rear Pillar Trim")
  7. Disconnect the power connector of the antenna amplifier (A) from the glass antenna amplifier.
  8. Turn on the radio. Measure the voltage between the terminals of the antenna amplifier power connector (A) and body ground (B).

    OK: Approximately 12 V (ACC+)

  9. Check the resistance of the radio antenna wire between the antenna connector terminals (A) and body ground (B).
    1. AM antenna (right side of rear pillar)

      Standard value: 125 kΩ ~ 165 kΩ. Short: approx. 0 Ω. Open: ∞ Ω

    2. FM1 Antenna (right rear pillar)

      Standard value: 80 kΩ ~ 120 kΩ. Short: approx. 0 Ω. Open: ∞ Ω

    3. FM2 Antenna (left side rear pillar)

      Standard value: 80 kΩ ~ 120 kΩ. Short: approx. 0 Ω. Open: ∞ Ω

  10. Check the grid lines for continuity.
  11. If poor radio reception is not resolved by the above checks, replace the amplifier. If radio reception is still poor, check the radio cable for a short circuit and the head unit for malfunction.
  12. Check continuity between the center terminals of the antenna cable.
  13. Check continuity between the outer terminals of the antenna cable. There should be continuity.
  14. If there is no continuity, replace the antenna cable.
  15. Check continuity between the center terminal (A) of the antenna cable and the glass antenna terminal (B). There should be continuity.
  16. If there is no continuity, replace the antenna amplifier.
  17. Check continuity between the center terminal (A) and the outer terminal (B) of the antenna cable. There should be no continuity.
  18. If there is continuity, replace the antenna cable.
