Quiz: how well do you know your Hyundai Sonata LF?

21 questions. After each answer you get a short explanation and a link to the manual page that covers it in detail.

Before lifting a Sonata on a hoist with heavy rear components (fuel tank, suspension, spare) removed, what should you do?
Place extra weight in the luggage compartment. Removing heavy rear parts shifts the centre of gravity and the car can tip on the lift. Add weight in the trunk first; a tyre/wheel assembly weighs about 14 kg, so front wheels can serve as ballast. Jack and Support Points

How long does the Sonata's theft alarm sound and flash when triggered?
30 seconds. The alarm lasts 30 seconds, then the system resets; unlocking with the remote or smart key stops it. The system also arms itself 30 seconds after you lock the doors and trunk. Anti-Theft System

Which brake fluid is recommended when bleeding the ESP system on the Sonata?
DOT3 or DOT4. DOT3 or DOT4 is recommended. Also wash off any fluid that gets on paint immediately, and finish by filling the reservoir to the MAX mark. Repair Procedures

In traffic with Smart Cruise Control, how long must the car ahead be stopped before you need to press the accelerator or RES+ to resume?
More than 3 seconds. If the vehicle ahead stops for more than 3 seconds, you must press the accelerator or RES+ to go. Also, SCC has no brake control in curves, so slow down yourself. Description and Operation

What does the ratchet in the Sonata's threaded fuel cap tell you?
The cap is sealed properly. The ratchet clicks loudly once the cap seals against the filler flange, reducing the chance of improper installation. This matters for the evaporative emission system's leak monitoring. Schematic Diagrams

Where must a rear-facing child seat never be installed in the Sonata?
On the front passenger seat. A rear-facing seat in front can cause serious injury or death if struck by the inflating airbag. Children under one year should always ride in a rear-facing infant seat. Selecting a Child Restraint System (CRS)

Within what speed range can the Sonata's AEB detect pedestrians ahead?
5–65 km/h. Pedestrian detection works at 5–65 km/h, and ESC must be active. You can also choose Fast, Normal or Slow timing for the initial collision warning. System Setting and Activation

What is the tightening torque for the rear upper arm bolt when removing the Sonata's rear hub carrier?
137.3–157 N·m. The rear upper arm bolt takes 137.3–157 N·m, same as the assist arm and lower arm bolts. The brake disc screw, by contrast, is only 4.9–5.8 N·m. Rear Hub - Carrier Repair Procedures

What must you avoid doing to the inside of the rear window with the glass antenna?
Cleaning with a scraper or cleaner. Cleaners or scrapers can damage the antenna elements. Metallic coatings such as Ni or Cd should also be avoided since they degrade AM/FM reception. Antenna

What is the maximum continuous run time of the Tire Mobility Kit compressor?
10 minutes. Do not run the compressor over 10 minutes at a time or it may overheat. The kit may also be ineffective for tyre damage larger than about 6 mm. Safety Notes for Using the Tire Mobility Kit

Before removing the Sonata's steering wheel, how long should you wait after disconnecting the negative battery cable?
At least 30 seconds. Wait at least 30 seconds, and set the front wheels straight ahead. The steering wheel lock bolt is then loosened and the wheel separated with SST 09561-11001. Repair Procedures

How often does a TPMS sensor measure pressure while the car is being driven?
Every 15 seconds. In driving mode it measures every 15 seconds and transmits every minute. When stationary it only measures every 60 seconds and does not transmit. TPMS Sensor Description and Operation

What must be done after replacing the transmission gear actuator assembly?
Run the clutch touch point learning with GDS. Clutch touch point learning with GDS is required. Before installing, make sure the actuator is in neutral and put transmission oil on the O-rings. Gear Actuator Assembly Repair Procedures

What does the occupant classification sensor (OCS) help the airbag control unit decide?
Whether to deploy the passenger airbag. The OCS sends occupancy status to the SRSCM over CAN, which separates empty/small child-seat cases from larger occupants. The ACU then decides on passenger airbag deployment. Occupant Classification System (OCS) Sensor Description and Operation

Why must R-134a refrigerant never be exposed to open flame?
It releases toxic phosgene gas. Contact with flame produces phosgene, a highly toxic gas, so an electronic leak detector must be used. Liquid R-134a on skin can also cause frostbite. General Safety Information and Precautions

How should the Sonata's rear headrest be positioned for best protection?
Middle of headrest level with the top of the eyes, close to the head. The middle of the headrest should match the head's centre of gravity, roughly eye-top height, and sit close to the head. Never drive with headrests removed. Rear seat

What must you do first before removing high-pressure fuel line components on the Sonata?
Release residual fuel pressure. Residual pressure in the high-pressure line can spray fuel and injure you, so release it first. Also take care not to damage the plastic clip on the quick connector, or the line may leak. Fuel Line Repair Procedures

What are the recommended limits when towing a Sonata with drive wheels off the ground?
Up to 30 km, below 50 km/h. Best to tow no farther than 30 km at under 50 km/h. A flatbed is the best method, and never tow with only a rope or chain. Tow/Haul

At what reverse speed does the Sonata's rear parking assist stop warning you even though objects are detected?
Above 10 km/h. Above 10 km/h it won't warn, and above about 5 km/h it may not detect objects at all. It senses objects within 120 cm behind the car. Rear Parking Assist System

What is the tightening torque of the intake manifold bolts and nuts on the Sonata?
18.6–24 N·m. The manifold is tightened to 18.6–24 N·m, first pre-torqued, then final-torqued in the specified sequence, using new gaskets. The ETC module bolts only need 7.8–9.8 N·m. Intake Manifold Repair Procedures

When removing the Sonata floor console, what should you do first?
Pull the shift knob and boots upward. The first step is pulling off the shift knob and boots. Wrap prying tools in protective tape and use a plastic panel remover to avoid damaging trim. Floor Console Assembly Repair Procedures
