■ Hill start (vehicles with hill-start assist control) The hill-start assist system will activate.
■ Driving in the rain
- Drive carefully in the rain, as visibility will be reduced, the windows may fog up and the road surface may become slippery.
- Drive carefully when it starts to rain, as the road surface becomes extremely slippery.
- Avoid high speeds when driving in the rain, as a layer of water may form between the tires and the road surface, preventing the steering and brakes from working properly.
■ Break-in of your new Toyota To extend the life of the vehicle, the following precautions are recommended:
- For the first 300 km: Avoid sudden braking.
- For the first 1,000 km:
- Do not drive at excessively high speeds.
- Avoid sudden acceleration.
- Do not drive for extended periods in low gears.
- Do not drive at a constant speed for extended periods.
■ If you use your vehicle in a foreign country Observe the applicable vehicle registration laws and make sure the correct fuel is available.
WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to observe this may result in serious or fatal injury.
■ Starting the vehicle (vehicles with multi-mode manual transmission) Always keep your foot on the brake pedal when stopped with the engine running. This prevents the vehicle from moving unexpectedly.
■ While driving the vehicle
- Do not drive unless you know exactly where the brake pedal and accelerator pedal are, to avoid pressing the wrong pedal.
- Accidentally pressing the accelerator pedal instead of the brake pedal will cause sudden acceleration that could lead to an accident.
- When reversing, twisting your body may make it difficult to operate the pedals. Make sure you operate the pedals correctly.
- Always maintain a correct driving posture, even when moving the vehicle only a short distance. This allows you to operate the brake and accelerator pedals correctly.
- Press the brake pedal with your right foot. In an emergency, pressing the brake pedal with your left foot may cause a delayed response and lead to an accident.
- Do not drive the vehicle over flammable materials, and do not stop it near such materials.
The exhaust system and exhaust gases can reach extremely high temperatures. These hot parts may cause a fire if flammable materials are nearby.
However, in an emergency, for example if it becomes impossible to stop the vehicle normally:
Continuous use of the brakes may cause them to overheat and lose their effectiveness.
WARNING
Observe the following precautions.
Failure to observe this may result in serious or fatal injury.
■ When driving on slippery road surfaces
- Sudden braking, acceleration or steering may cause the tyres to skid and reduce your ability to control the vehicle.
- Sudden acceleration or engine braking caused by a gear change or changes in engine speed may cause the vehicle to skid.
- After driving through a puddle, lightly press the brake pedal to make sure the brakes work properly. When brake pads get wet, they may prevent the brakes from working correctly. If only the brakes on one side are wet and do not work properly, this may affect steering control.
■ When engaging gears with the gear lever
- On vehicles with multi-mode manual transmission, do not let the vehicle roll backwards while the gear lever is in a driving position, or move forward with the gear lever in R.
This may cause the engine to stall, or reduce braking and steering performance, resulting in accidents or damage to the vehicle.
This may damage the transmission, resulting in loss of vehicle control.
■ When the vehicle is stationary
- Do not rev the engine unnecessarily.
If the gear lever is in a position other than N, the vehicle may accelerate suddenly and unexpectedly and cause an accident.
■ When the vehicle is parked
- When the vehicle is exposed to sunlight, do not leave glasses, lighters, spray cans or drink cans inside the passenger compartment.
Failure to observe this precaution may result in the following consequences:
- Gas leaking from a lighter or spray can may cause a fire.
- The temperature inside the vehicle may cause plastic lenses and plastic eyeglass frames to deform or crack.
- • Drink cans may burst, causing the contents to spill inside the vehicle and short-circuit the vehicle's electrical components.
- Do not leave lighters inside the vehicle. If a lighter is left in the glovebox or on the floor, for example, it may ignite accidentally when loading luggage or adjusting the seat, causing a fire.
- Do not attach stickers to the windscreen or windows. Do not place containers such as air freshener canisters on the dashboard or instrument panel. Stickers or containers can act as lenses and cause a fire in the vehicle.
- Do not leave doors or windows open if the curved glass is coated with a metallic film, such as silver. In reflected sunlight, the glass may act as a lens and cause a fire.
- On vehicles with a multi-mode manual transmission, always apply the parking brake, move the shift lever to E, M or R, turn off the engine and lock the vehicle.
Do not leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running.
Failure to do so may result in burns.
Make sure the gear is engaged by checking the gear position indicator.
Parking the vehicle without engaging a gear may cause the vehicle to move and result in an accident.■ When sleeping in the vehicle Always turn off the engine. Otherwise, the shift lever may be moved accidentally or the accelerator pedal may be depressed, causing an accident or a fire due to excessive engine overheating. In addition, if the vehicle is parked in a poorly ventilated area, exhaust gases may accumulate and enter the vehicle, resulting in serious or fatal injury.
■ When braking
- Drive with extra caution when the brakes are wet.
Braking distance increases when the brakes are wet, and this may cause the braking force to differ between the two sides of the vehicle. The parking brake may also fail to hold the vehicle securely.
In this case, braking is still possible, but more force than normal will be required on the pedal. Braking distance will also tend to increase. The brakes must be inspected immediately.
Each press of the brake pedal reduces the brake booster assistance.
NOTE
■ While driving the vehicle
- Do not press the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal at the same time while driving, as this may affect engine torque.
- Multi-mode manual transmission
- Do not use the accelerator pedal or the hill start assist system to hold the vehicle stationary on an uphill slope.
- Manual transmission
- Do not change gears without fully depressing the clutch pedal. After engaging the gear, do not release the clutch pedal abruptly. Doing so may damage the clutch, transmission and gears.
- Observe the following precautions to avoid damaging the clutch.
- Do not rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving.
This may cause clutch malfunction.
This may damage the clutch.
- Do not move the shift lever to R while the vehicle is still moving. Doing so may damage the clutch, transmission and gears.
■ Avoid damage to vehicle components
- Never turn the steering wheel fully in either direction and hold it in that position for extended periods.
■ If a tire punctures while driving A punctured or damaged tire may cause the following situations.
Hold the steering wheel firmly and gradually depress the brake pedal to slow the vehicle.
- Vehicle control may become difficult.
- The vehicle will produce abnormal vibrations or noises.
- The vehicle will lean abnormally.

■ When driving on flooded roads Do not drive on flooded roads after heavy rain, etc. This may cause serious damage to the vehicle, as illustrated below:
- Engine seizure
- Short circuit of electrical components
- Engine damage due to water intrusion
If you have driven on flooded roads and water has entered the vehicle, contact any authorized Toyota dealer or repairer, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional, to have the following checked:
- Brake operation
- Changes in the quantity and quality of engine oil, transaxle/differential fluid, etc.
- Condition of the lubricant for suspension bearings and joints (where possible) and operation of all joints, bearings, etc.
