If the engine does not start
If the engine does not start even when the correct starting procedures are followed, check each of the following items:
The engine does not start even though the starter motor operates normally.
The cause of the problem may be one of the following:
- There may not be enough fuel in the vehicle's fuel tank.
Refuel the vehicle.
The starter motor turns slowly, the cabin lights and headlights are dim, and the horn does not sound or sounds at a low volume.
The cause of the problem may be one of the following:
- The battery may be discharged.
- The battery terminal connections may be loose or corroded.
The starter motor does not turn (vehicles with smart entry and
start system).
The engine starting circuit may not function correctly due to an electrical problem such as an open circuit or a blown fuse.
However, a temporary procedure is available to start the engine.
The starter motor does not turn, the cabin lights and headlights do not come on, and the horn does not sound.
The cause of the problem may be one of the following:
- One or both battery terminals may be disconnected.
- The battery may be discharged.
- There may be a malfunction in the steering lock system (vehicles with smart entry and start system).
If the problem cannot be resolved or if the repair procedures are not known, contact any Toyota authorised dealer or repairer, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional.
Emergency starting function
If the engine does not start, carry out the following temporary procedure to start the engine, provided the engine switch operates correctly:
- Apply the parking brake.
- Shift the shift lever to N.
- Set the engine switch to ACCESSORY mode.
- Hold the engine switch down for about 15 seconds while fully depressing the brake pedal (multi-mode manual transmission) or the clutch pedal (manual transmission).
Although the engine can be started with this procedure, the system may not function correctly. Have the vehicle checked by any Toyota authorised dealer or repairer, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional.
If the shift lever cannot be moved (vehicles with multi-mode manual transmission)
If the shift lever cannot be moved while depressing the brake pedal, there may be a problem with the shift lock system (a system that prevents accidental operation of the shift lever). Have the vehicle checked immediately by any Toyota authorised dealer or repairer, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional.
Also, if the vehicle battery is discharged, the shift lever cannot be operated.
