If the vehicle overheats
The following situations may indicate that your vehicle is overheating.
- The engine coolant high temperature warning light comes on or flashes (1KR engine); comes on (HM01 engine); or you notice a loss of engine power. (For example, the vehicle speed does not increase.)
- Steam is coming from under the hood.
Corrective procedure
- Stop the vehicle in a safe place, turn off the air conditioning and stop the engine.
- If steam is visible: Wait for the steam to subside, then open the hood carefully.

- Radiator
- Cooling fan
If a significant amount of coolant has leaked, contact a Toyota dealer or repair shop immediately, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional.
4. The coolant level is sufficient if it is between the "FULL", "F" or "MAX" and "LOW" or "MIN" marks on the reservoir.

5. If necessary, add coolant.
In an emergency, water may be used if coolant is not available.

6. Start the engine and turn on the air conditioning to check that the radiator cooling fan operates, and check for coolant leaks from the radiator or hoses.
The fan comes on when the air conditioning is turned on immediately after a cold start. Confirm that the fan is actually operating by checking the noise and airflow. If these are difficult to check, turn the air conditioning on and off repeatedly. (The fan may not operate in sub-zero temperatures.)
7. If the fan does not operate: Stop the engine immediately and contact a Toyota dealer or repair shop, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional.
If the fan operates: Have the vehicle checked by the nearest Toyota dealer or repair shop, or another suitably qualified and equipped professional.
WARNING
■ When checking the area under the hood of the vehicle Observe the following precautions.
Failure to observe this precaution may result in serious injury, such as burns.
- If steam is coming from under the hood, wait for it to subside before opening the hood. The engine compartment may be very hot.
- Keep hands and clothing (in particular neckties, scarves or shawls) away from the fan and belts. Failure to observe these precautions may cause your hands to be crushed or clothing to become caught, resulting in serious injury.
- Do not remove the radiator cap (1KR engine) or the coolant reservoir cap while the engine and radiator are hot. Steam or hot coolant may spray out at high temperature.
NOTE
■ When adding engine coolant After the engine has cooled sufficiently, add the coolant slowly. Adding cold coolant to a hot engine too quickly may damage the engine.
■ To avoid damage to the cooling system Observe the following precautions:
- Avoid contaminating the coolant with foreign substances (such as sand or dust, etc.).
- Do not use coolant additives.
