General Body Information
The body is made of pressed steel panels and is available in three versions: four-door "Sedan", five-door "Hatchback" and five-door "Wagon". Most parts are joined by welding, but some joints are bonded with adhesive, and the front fenders are bolted on.
The front and rear body sections incorporate crumple zones. The doors are mounted on the body pillars. From September 1994, all vehicles are equipped with a driver's side airbag. A passenger side airbag is also available as an option. The lower surfaces of the body and doors are coated with a special material that resists damage from small stones.
Parts that are not subject to high loads are made of plastic. These are mainly interior trim parts and some exterior parts. The outer surfaces of the front and rear bumpers have a very strong, lightweight synthetic spray-applied coating. The underbody areas, such as the wheel arches, are covered with plastic splash guards to protect the metal from corrosion.
