Ignition System

Ignition Timing

~2min read

A timing light is required to check and adjust the ignition timing, preferably with an adapter that can be connected to the high-tension cable of the No. 1 cylinder. If such an adapter is not available, insert an adapter between the high-tension cable of the No. 1 cylinder and the corresponding terminal of the distributor cap, and connect the timing light lead to it. As the spark plugs are recessed quite deeply, there is no point in connecting the adapter to the spark plug.

The crankshaft pulley has a notch for setting the ignition timing, and the timing belt cover has a scale in degrees of crankshaft rotation before TDC. The scale is marked in 5° steps, with the 0° and 10° graduations marked with numbers; 0° corresponds to TDC.

· Start the engine and warm it up to operating temperature, then check the idle speed. Stop the engine.

· Open the cover of the diagnostic module at the rear left corner of the engine compartment and short the TE1 and E1 terminals with a jumper or a suitable piece of wire. The terminal markings are shown on the inside of the module cover.

· Connect the timing light lead to the spark plug wire of No. 1 cylinder.

· Start the engine and let it idle. Direct the light from the timing light onto the crankshaft pulley. The mark on the pulley must align with the graduation specified in "Specifications" for this engine type. · If the ignition timing needs adjustment, loosen the two distributor housing mounting bolts and slowly turn the distributor housing until the mark on the pulley is in the correct position. Tighten the bolts.

· Remove the jumper wire from the diagnostic module terminals and repeat the procedure. Make sure that the ignition timing is within the range specified in "Specifications".

· Stop the engine and disconnect the timing light.

Safety

Avoid touching the spark plug wires and keep your clothing, hair, etc. away from the rotating engine parts.
