Ignition System Check
Note: Always turn the ignition switch off before disconnecting or connecting any component, and when using a multimeter to measure resistance.
· If the ignition system malfunctions (for example, engine misfire), first check whether the cause is a poor connection or careless maintenance. Make sure the air cleaner filter is sufficiently clean, the spark plugs are in good condition and correctly gapped, and the engine air intake ducts are not clogged with debris and are not seriously damaged. If the engine runs very roughly, check the compression and valve clearance. · Check whether the ECM has stored any diagnostic trouble code. The code will indicate which circuit is faulty. · Check the ignition coil.
· Check the distributor cap.
· If these checks do not reveal the fault, use the Toyota diagnostic equipment at a Toyota dealer service station. The engine control system has a special connector (at the rear left corner of the engine compartment) to which the diagnostic tester (SCAN TOOL) can be connected. The scan tool will quickly and reliably locate the fault, without the need to check each circuit separately and risk damaging the Engine Control Module (ECM).
· If necessary, check the wiring and connectors of the ignition system. In this case, first disconnect the ECM connectors.
