Brake Pedal Inspection and Adjustment - Pedal Free Play

~1min read

  • · With the engine off, depress the brake pedal several times to deplete the residual vacuum.
  • · Press the pedal lightly by hand until the resistance starts to increase noticeably. Measure this travel. This is called the free play. · Compare the result with the Technical Data. If the stop light switch was installed correctly, the pedal free play should be within specification. If the free play still does not match the specification, check the pedal height again and adjust the stop light switch as described above. If the free play is still out of tolerance, the master cylinder or vacuum booster may be faulty, or air may be trapped in the system and must be bled.
