Parking Brake Adjustment
In this manual: Brake System
~2min read
The parking brake must hold the vehicle on a 30% grade when the lever is moved 4 to 7 ratchet clicks. If the lever travel is less than specified, the brake shoes may not fully retract from the drum when the lever is released. If the travel is more than specified, the brake will not hold the vehicle on a grade.
Models with rear drum service brakes
- · Place chocks under the rear wheels and release the parking brake.
- · Remove the instrument panel console trim cover.
- · Loosen the lock nut of the cable adjuster (upper nut) on the side of the brake lever. · Turn the adjuster nut until the required result is obtained (4 to 7 ratchet clicks).
- · Install the instrument panel console trim cover.
Models with rear disc brakes
- · To adjust the clearance between the parking brake shoes and drum, chock the front wheels, raise the rear of the vehicle with a jack and support it on stands. Remove the wheels and temporarily install three wheel nuts on the drum studs to hold the drums in place.
- · Remove the rubber plugs from the brake drums. With the parking brake fully released, rotate the drums so that the openings face downward and the adjusters are visible through the holes. Insert a screwdriver into the opening and turn the adjuster wheel until the shoes contact the drum. Then back off the adjuster wheel by 8 notches so that the drum rotates freely again. Reinstall the plug and repeat the same procedure on the other brake drum.

- · After adjusting the clearances, adjust the brake lever travel as described above.
