Front Brake Discs - Inspection

~1min read

If one disc requires replacement, both discs and the complete set of pads must be replaced at the same time to ensure equal braking torque at the wheels.

  • · Remove the front brake pads.
  • · Temporarily secure the hub to the disc with three wheel nuts.
  • · Inspect the friction surfaces of the disc for cracks and deep scoring (shallow grooves are acceptable). A disc with cracks must be replaced! Scoring may be removed by resurfacing the disc, provided its thickness does not fall below the minimum allowable thickness.
  • · Check the disc lateral runout with a dial indicator, positioning the indicator tip 10 mm from the outer edge of the disc. If runout exceeds the limit given in the Specifications, check the hub bearing axial play. If hub bearing runout is within limits, change the position of the disc on the hub by turning it 1/5 of a revolution and secure with the nuts. Check runout again. Repeat, turning the disc relative to the hub 1/5 of a revolution each time. If runout is still out of limit after all attempts, the disc may be resurfaced, provided its thickness does not fall below the minimum allowable thickness. · Disc thickness variation may cause runout. Measure the disc thickness with a micrometer at several points and compare the greatest difference with the limit. Excessive variation can be corrected by resurfacing, provided the thickness does not fall below the minimum allowable (26 mm).
