Wheel Alignment Angles Adjustment

~1min read

PROCEDURE

Wheel alignment adjustment is necessary to ensure proper operation of the front suspension. Incorrect angles degrade vehicle handling, reduce driving stability, and cause increased tire wear.

Wheel Alignment Specifications

PARAMETER GOLF, JETTA GOLF GT, GTI JETTA GT, GTI GOLF M103, JETTA M103
Toe-in for 13'' rims (total for both wheels) 0° ± 0°10’ 0° ± 0°10’ 0° ± 0°10’
10' corresponds to the toe-in value 1.0 mm 1.0 mm 1.0 mm
Camber angle -0°30’ ± 0°20’ -0°35’ ± 0°20’ -0°25’ ± 0°20
Difference in camber angles between left and right wheels, maximum 0°30’ 0°30’ 0°30’
Toe-out on turns when front wheels are turned 20° right or left 1°20’ ± 30’ 1°20’ ± 30’ 1°20’ ± 30’
Caster angle 1°30’ ± 30’ 1°33’ ± 30’ 1°25’ ± 30’
Difference in caster angles between left and right sides, maximum 1° 1° 1°

Wheel alignment adjustment must be performed on an alignment stand.

Toe-in is adjusted using the right adjustable tie rod 13 (refer to the Steering Mechanism illustration). To adjust, loosen lock nut 1, turn tie rod 13 to set the toe-in, then tighten lock nut 1. Camber angle can be adjusted by installing special bolts 18 (refer to the Front Suspension illustration).

When doing so, first replace the upper bolt and then check the camber angle. Replacing the bolts can change the camber angle by 1°.

Caster angle is not adjustable.

Before checking and adjusting wheel alignment angles, tire pressure must be brought to specification, steering must be adjusted, and clearances in the steering linkage and suspension must be within permissible limits. The vehicle must be fully fueled and equipped with the spare wheel.
