Checking and Adjusting Injection Pump Timing

GENERAL INFORMATION

Audi requires the injection timing to be checked with the engine running using an electronic tester. Since this tool may not be available, the adjustment with the engine stopped using a special pin is described here. This method is not precise and may only be used as an auxiliary means. For a more accurate check, it is recommended to contact a dealer.

Injection pump timing must always be checked and adjusted after tensioning, removing or replacing the timing belt, or after loosening the injection pump mounting bolts or timing belt gears.

INSPECTION

PROCEDURE

1. Set the crankshaft to the TDC position of the No. 1 cylinder piston, refer to the subsection Setting No. 1 Cylinder Piston to TDC.

2. Lock the camshaft using the adjusting gauge, refer to the subsection Setting No. 1 Cylinder Piston to TDC.

3. Now the pin VW–

3359 must engage in the hole of the timing gear hub and the pump bracket. This fixes the position of the injection pump. The pin must engage so that the hole (arrow in the accompanying illustration) is approximately 3 mm in front of the pump hub.

CAUTION

Instead of pin VW–3359, any 6 mm diameter pin can be used, for example, a drill bit.

4. If the pin does not enter the pump hole even though the TDC marks and camshaft position match, the injection timing must be checked again. Injection timing adjustment

5. Loosen the injection pump timing gear mounting bolts –1– so that the timing belt gear can rotate relative to the pump hub.

CAUTION

Do not loosen the central mounting bolt on the pump hub, as the pump will shift otherwise. It will then not be possible to adjust it properly in the workshop.

6. Turn the pump hub until the pin can be inserted.

CAUTION

The pin must engage so that the hole (arrow in the illustration) is approximately 3 mm in front of the pump hub.

7. The pin must engage so that the hole (arrow in the illustration) is approximately 3 mm in front of the pump hub.

8. Remove the pin.

9. Remove the adjusting gauge.

10. Turn the crankshaft 2 revolutions in the direction of engine rotation and set it again to the TDC position of the No. 1 cylinder piston. Check the position of the marks on the flywheel and camshaft.

11. Lock the injection pump timing gear with the pin. If the pin does not enter the pump hole, repeat the adjustment process.

12. Remove the pin.

13. Install the cylinder head cover gasket. Tighten the cover to a torque of 10 N·m.

14. Install the upper timing belt cover.

15. Insert the plastic plug into the clutch housing opening.

CAUTION

Finally, check the injection pump timing dynamically (dealer work).

After precisely adjusting the injection timing, tighten the 3 injection pump timing gear mounting bolts to 20 N·m and then turn an additional 90° (1/4 turn). If the bolts were tightened this way, they must be replaced with new ones after loosening.
