PROCEDURE

1. Move the selector lever to position “P”.

2. Unscrew bolt –2– at the front mount –1– of the selector cable.

3. Move selector lever –4– to position “P”, pressing it against the rear stop. The parking lock must engage; with the parking brake released, the vehicle must not move.

CAUTION

Do not remove the retaining clip.

4. Shift the selector cable at bolt –2– so that it is not under tension. In this position, tighten bolt –2– to a torque of 5 N·m.

5. Finally, check the adjustment as described below. Checking the Adjustment

6. Move the selector to position “P” while pressing the lock button in the handle, approximately 5 mm rearward, then release. The selector must return to its original position on its own.

7. Move the selector to position “N” while pressing the lock button in the handle, approximately 5 mm forward, then release. The selector must return to its original position on its own.

8. If the selector does not lock in position, repeat the adjustment.

9. Drive the vehicle and check selector operation. The engine must start only with the selector in position “P” or “N”.

10. Switch the ignition on. With the vehicle stationary, the selector must be able to leave position “P” or “N” only when the brake pedal is pressed at the same time. Adjusting the Shift Lock Cable

11. Move the selector to position “1”.

12. Remove the steering column covers.

13. Turn the ignition key to position “Start” and release it. Check the clearance between the cable lever and the lock locating pin. It must be 0.7 mm.

14. To adjust, loosen the cable clamp nut and position the cable lever to obtain the required clearance.

15. Tighten the clamp nut.

16. Tighten the switch housing bolts and install the steering column covers. Adjusting the Shift Lock Solenoid

17. Move the selector to position “N” or “P”.

18. Loosen the solenoid mounting bolts.

19. Insert a 0.3 mm feeler gauge between the solenoid plunger and the lever.

20. If necessary, move the solenoid and tighten its mounting bolts.
