Adjusting the Shift Linkage
GENERAL INFORMATION
To adjust the linkage correctly, the gearbox, clutch and clutch linkage must be in good working order. In addition, the linkage components and transmission linkage must move freely and be fully serviceable.
Engines 1.6 L
PROCEDURE
1. Place the gearbox in neutral and apply the parking brake.
2. Open the shift lever boot and pull it upward.

3. Release the clamp (arrow in illustration) on the gearbox. The shift rod/selector lever connection must move freely.

4. Loosen bolts –1– and –2– on the shift lever and press the stop on the right side downward (arrow in illustration).
5. Retighten bolt –1–.

6. Insert gauge AUDI–
3421.
7. Adjust the shift rod so that it is not under load (gearbox in neutral) and tighten the clamp to 20 N·m.
8. Remove the gauge.
9. Finally, engage reverse gear.
10. Loosen bolt –1–. Note: The left side of the stop is pressed in during this step.
11. Tighten bolts –1– and –2– to 25 N·m.
12. Disengage reverse gear.
13. Shift through all gears. They must shift freely and without binding. Pay particular attention to
CAUTION
to the reverse gear lock operation.14. Secure the shift lever cover and shift knob. Engines 1.8 and 1.9 L
15. Place the gearbox in neutral and apply the parking brake.
16. Open the shift lever boot and pull it upward.

17. Remove the damper on the shift lever. Refer to the illustration.

18. Loosen bolt (A) and nut (B) so that the shift cable and selector lever/cable can move freely in the oval holes.

19. Loosen bolt (C). If necessary, remove the foam seal near the bolt.
20. Install shift lever gauge AUDI–
3422.
21. Turn the gauge mounting hook under the support plate and tighten nut (D).

22. Secure the shift lever in the left side of the sliding element (arrow in illustration).
23. Push the shift lever with the sliding element to the left, in the direction of the arrow, until it stops, and secure the sliding element with screw (E).
24. Push the lever to the right, against the direction of the arrow, and secure it.
25. Tighten bolt (C) to 15 N·m.

26. Insert the wedge and locating pin AUDI–3192/
1. Insert the wedge between the shift lever and the cover so that there is no gap.
CAUTION
The shift lever must not be wedged up.
27. In this position, tighten the shouldered bolt (A) to 25 N·m and the locknut (B) to 15 N·m.
28. Remove the wedge, locating pin and lever gauge.
29. Install the lever knob and boot.
30. Install the damper on the shift lever to 25 N·m. Checking the adjustment
31. The shift lever must be in neutral in the slot for third and fourth gear.
32. Depress the clutch, start the engine and wait approximately 3 – 6 s for the gearbox input shaft to stop. Then shift through all gears several times. Pay particular
CAUTION
pay attention to engaging reverse gear.33. If the linkage still binds when re-engaging a gear, check the shift lever shaft travel as follows:
34. Engage first gear.

35. With first gear engaged, press the shift lever to the left. At the same time, ask an assistant to check the lever shaft. When the lever is moved, the lever shaft must have approximately 1 mm of travel in the direction (arrow in illustration).
36. If this does not occur, disengage first gear and loosen nut (A) of the selector lever cable pin again. The selector cable has some play at the pin, caused by the transmission element.

37. Remove the play in the shift cable by pushing it with the pin slightly toward the rear of the vehicle (arrow in illustration). In this position, tighten nut (A) to 15 N·m.
38. Secure the boot and shift knob.
