Instead of a manual transmission, the AUDI A3 may be equipped with a 4-speed automatic transmission (AT). When starting off, the AT performs the function of a conventional clutch, and while driving it performs gear shifting.
The main components of the AT are the torque converter, the planetary gear set, and the hydraulic or electronic control system. To change to a different gear ratio in the planetary gear set, hydraulically actuated multi-plate brakes and a multi-plate clutch are used.
By its function, the torque converter corresponds to a hydraulic clutch. Its role is to provide clutch engagement when starting off and when shifting gears.
Shift pressure control is performed by an electronic control unit instead of the hydraulics used in a conventional manual transmission. Thus, more complete information is available for better shift control, which makes it possible to select the optimal gear ratio depending on the operating conditions of the vehicle and the driver's wishes, which in turn improves shift quality.
There are no manual "Economy" or "Sport" programs. The control unit recognizes from the speed at which the accelerator pedal is pressed whether the driver wants to drive "sporty" or "economical" and controls shift timing accordingly. Shift control also takes into account driving resistance, for example whether the vehicle is driving uphill or downhill, whether a trailer is attached, and headwind.
If faults occur in the sensor or solenoid valve signal circuits, the transmission switches to the emergency operating program, and the faults are simultaneously stored in the fault memory. They can be read from the control unit memory later.
Appropriate AT experience and qualifications are required to evaluate operation and to correctly locate faults.
CAUTION
Vehicles with AT may be towed a distance of up to 50 km at a speed not exceeding 50 km/h. When towing on a transporter, the front of the vehicle must be raised.Test yourself
