Deactivating the airbags
Have deactivated airbags reactivated as soon as possible so that they can resume their protective function.
There are two ways to deactivate the airbags.
You can deactivate the front passenger airbag using the key-operated switch* on page 197. You can also have your Audi dealer deactivate additional airbags.
Front passenger airbag
Deactivate the front passenger airbag if, in very exceptional circumstances, you must install a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat.
We recommend installing the child seat only on the rear seat so that the front passenger airbag remains active.
Airbag system monitoring
The airbag warning light comes on for a few seconds each time you switch on the ignition.
CAUTION!
- Never install a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat unless the airbag has been deactivated beforehand: risk of death! See "Using child seats on the front passenger seat".
- If you no longer use a child seat on the front passenger seat, you must reactivate the front passenger airbag using the key-operated switch*.
Note
When you deactivate the front passenger airbag, all other airbags remain operational.
Front passenger airbag key-operated switch
Using the key-operated switch, you can deactivate the front passenger airbag.

Fig. 188 Indicator showing that the front passenger airbag has been deactivated using the key-operated switch
The key-operated switch for deactivating the front passenger airbag is located in the glove box, see fig. 187.
- To deactivate the front passenger airbag, turn the key to position (0).
- To reactivate the front passenger airbag, turn the key to position (1).
If you have deactivated the front passenger airbag yourself using the key-operated switch, the "PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF" indicator remains lit permanently to remind you that it has been deactivated, see fig. 188. Also observe the specific features of the AIRBAG indicator in the instrument cluster.
CAUTION!
- If, in very exceptional circumstances, you install a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat, the airbag must be deactivated beforehand - risk of death!
- Reactivate the front passenger airbag as soon as you no longer use the child seat so that the airbag can resume its protective function.
- The driver bears full responsibility for the position of the key-operated switch.
Note
When you deactivate the front passenger airbag, all other airbags remain operational.
