ATF fluid is normally replaced only during AT overhaul. If there is a leak, check the fluid level.
The approximate amount of fluid to be replaced is 3.3 L.

* Use only fluids approved by the manufacturer. Use the fluids listed in the Specifications. Consult a service station before using any other fluid.

Observe special cleanliness when changing the fluid. Even slight contamination leads to AT failure.

* Do not operate the engine without fluid in the AT. Do not tow the vehicle with an AT that is not filled with fluid.

CHECK

1. The fluid level can be checked with the BMW dipstick.
2. Signs of too high a fluid level: strong foaming, fluid loss, increased fluid temperature during fast driving, fluid leaking from the AT breather.
3. Signs of too low a fluid level: clicking of AT valves, foaming, engine racing, general functional faults.

Fluid change

PROCEDURE

1. Drive the vehicle 15 km to warm up the AT.
2. Raise the vehicle and support it on stands so that it is level. Remove the engine undershield. Refer to Removal and Installation of Engine Undershield.
3. Remove the drain plug (1) from the oil pan. Collect the draining fluid. If the fluid has a burnt smell and a dark color, the AT requires repair.

* Take the old fluid to a collection point. Never dispose of it with household waste.

4. Отверните заливную пробку.

4. Remove the filler plug.
5. Install the drain plug with a new sealing ring. Tightening torque: 15 N·m.
6. Fill the AT with fluid up to the edge of the filler hole. Remove excess fluid.
7. Start the engine. The selector must be in position “P”. Switch on the exterior lights. The idle speed will increase.
8. Top up the ATF again until it reaches the edge of the filler neck.
9. Install the filler plug (2) with a new sealing ring. Tightening torque: 100 N·m.
10. With the engine idling, move the selector several times through all positions.
11. Check the fluid level at a BMW service station.
