Before Driving
Vertical load on the towing hitch
The minimum vertical load on the towing hitch is 25 kg.
Observe the maximum permissible towing hitch loads specified.
The vertical load on the towing hitch increases the overall vehicle mass. The maximum permissible additional load is reduced by the mass of the towing hitch and the load it carries. Take this into account and do not exceed the maximum permissible gross vehicle weight when driving with a trailer.
Loading Luggage
Place cargo in the trailer as far forward as possible and, if possible, close to the axle.
A low center of gravity of the trailer improves the safety of the entire vehicle combination.
Do not exceed the permissible values for the total trailer mass and the towed load mass. Always use the lower value as a guide.
Tire Inflation Pressure
Pay special attention to the tire pressures of the vehicle and trailer. The correct values are those specified for the vehicle at maximum load. After adjusting the tire pressures, reset the tire pressure monitor.
For the trailer, the correct pressure values are those specified by its manufacturer.
Flat Tire Monitor
After attaching or detaching the trailer, reset the tire pressure monitor.
Exterior rear-view mirrors
Regulations require two outside rear view mirrors that allow the driver to observe both rear corners of the trailer. Such mirrors are available from a BMW Service Center.
Power Consumers
When towing a caravan (camper trailer), take the battery capacity into account and switch on electrical consumers for the minimum time necessary.
The lamp wattage in the trailer rear lights must not exceed the following values:
turn signals: 21 W each side; rear marker lights: 30 W each side; brake lights: 42 W total; rear fog lights: 42 W total; reversing lights: 42 W total.
Always check that the trailer rear lights are working before setting off. Driving with inoperative rear lights endangers road safety.◄
