Operation

Active Steering

~1min read

Operating Principle

Active Steering is a system that varies the steering gear ratio. Depending on vehicle speed, the effort the driver must apply to the steering wheel also varies.

At low driving speeds (for example:

in town or while parking), the steering ratio increases, and the driver needs less effort to turn the steered wheels.

As speed increases, the steering ratio decreases proportionally. In this way, the system optimizes vehicle handling according to speed.

In critical situations, the system can deliberately change the steering angle of the steered wheels set by the driver, stabilizing the vehicle before the driver would. When the DSC system is switched off, this stabilizing effect is not available.

Malfunctions

The following warning lamps have illuminated:

the system is faulty or switched off. At low driving speeds, the steering wheel must be turned further.

At high speed, the vehicle responds more sharply to steering wheel input.

Continue driving with caution and anticipate the situation. Have the system checked at a BMW Service Center.

If the warning lamp comes on when the engine is started for the first time after a interruption in the power supply, the system must be initialized.

System Initialization

1. Start the engine.

2. The vehicle is stationary and the steering wheel is in the straight-ahead position. Turn the steering wheel fully to the left, then fully to the right, and then return it to the straight-ahead position.

3. Switch off the engine.

After restarting the engine, the Active Steering system is again fully ready for operation.
